HISTORY WEDNESDAY
If you remember last weeks post, you will recall that Albeni Falls Dam had no fatalities or serious injuries during it's construction. However, this dumpster that ran away and plowed into a Caterpiller D-8 dozer is not included in that count. The damage done on both of these pieces of equipment totals at around $3,900 in 1951. That's nearly $50,000 in today's money!

Our U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District Commander Col. Kathryn Sanborn, together with members of our district water management and Albeni Falls Dam natural resource management teams, hosted our annual spring operations public meeting, May 7, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Public meetings are important to us. They allow us to engage with our stakeholders, including the public on projects we're working on at the dam, including our water management goals, spring (lake refill) operations, upcoming recreation season and updates on the spillway gate replacement project.

Volunteers are vital to our recreation mission," said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District Natural Resource Specialist and Recreation (REC) Business Line Manager Crystal Baughman.

"Our volunteer hosts not only ensure the smooth operation of our campgrounds and Visitor Center but they strengthen our ties to the local community. By providing a safe and enjoyable experience for over 400,000 annual visitors with genuine enthusiasm and commitment, they truly embody the spirit of service. We simply couldn't achieve our goals without our wonderful volunteers."

Our volunteer hosts completed their orientation training May 4-7, which included topics covering equipment placement, maintenance orientation and expectations, site limitations and parking, to name a few. Our park ranger staff took them on campground walkthroughs of each recreation area, and they issued them their property items (vests, etc) and keys.
