OFD RFFT 2026-1 continued training this past week covering multiple topics including building construction, fire behavior, fire extinguishers, SCBA skills, and task oriented physical training.

Week 1 of the Olean Recruit Firefighter Academy is in the books! Recruits will complete daily PT sessions throughout the course of the program that include running, task oriented interval workouts, and resistance training.

Topics covered this week included emergency vehicle operations, personal protective equipment, gear donning drills, and SCBA use.

Please join the Olean Fire Department in welcoming the 2026-1 Recruit Firefighter Training Class. This class will complete a rigorous 14 week training program to become professional firefighters. The program will cover a wide array of topics including basic and advanced fire ground skills, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, vehicle extrication, physical fitness training and many other specialized topics.

‘C’ Platoon had the pleasure of hosting our neighbors from the Allegany Fire Department for a joint training this evening. Crews covered drafting, rural water supply operations, and communications. Trainings like these ensure cohesive operations between agencies for when the need arises.

This morning A platoon trained on Rapid intervention. Teams of two worked on navigating a series of obstacles to locate and remove a downed fire fighter.

The City of Olean Fire Department is saddened by the passing of Buffalo Fire Captain Scott Janowski, and extends our heartfelt condolences to his family and the Buffalo Fire Department.

Captain Janowski was a well-known and well-respected firefighter who loved teaching the job to others. May he rest in peace.

City of Olean Firefighters are wearing pink during the month of October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. We encourage everyone to schedule regular screenings and talk with their doctor about the best plan for early detection.
