‘An Evergreen Atlas’ is a collaborative handmade artist book created by Evergreen students and faculty in the 2008 ‘Nature: Image and Object’ program taught by faculty emeritus Lucia Harrison. Each artist created a map that focused on one aspect of their experience at Evergreen. This book is currently on the display table for viewing in the James F. Holly Rare Books Room on the third floor of the library. 📖🍃

“Higher“ by John Edmonds is a monograph artist book of photographic portraiture. The series of images in this book embody the aesthetics of elevation. Through different approaches to visibility, invisibility, masks, and vanishing, an oscillation between public perception vs. privacy regarding what is considered vulnerable and sacred is expressed. Edmonds’ work engages and inspires questions about race, gender, masculinity, femininity, and representation. Edmonds photography steps away from the constraints of specificity and binary perception, to open up the way in which viewers think about the black body. ‘Young New York’ by Ethan James Green is a photography book of New York’s millennial scene-makers. This collection of refined black and white photography portraiture captures striking vulnerability and presence in each subject, which consists of gender binary-flouting muses, q***r youth, artists, models, and night life icons. This book is one of many selected works displayed in The Rare Books Room’s Summer Exhibition: ‘American at 250.’ To view this book in person along with the rest of the collection swing by the James F. ‘Connections: The Willow & the Mountain’ by Mari Eckstein Gower is an artist book created for the 2021 Science Stories Project at the University of Puget Sound. This book conveys stories of connection, resiliency, and healing documented within the Mt. St. Helens’ ecosystem following the 1980 eruption. Through handmade papers, scientific data, expressive reflections, unconventional book structure, and narrative paintings, Gower’s book utilizes art and science to navigate interconnected themes of loss, renewal, and the ways in which ecosystems and organisms contain endless possibilities that surprise and inspire us. ‘Every Object Has a Ritual’ by Selena Kearney is an artist book containing a series of photographs that rebuke the way in which sacred Indigenous artifacts have been minimized, appropriated, and homogenized in the form of costumes, masks, sports fan wear, and various other worn regalia. These photographs and the objects within them reflect the cultural harm that has been perpetrated toward Native American identity within mainstream settler culture. This book, along with many other selected works, is currently on display as part of the ‘America at 250’ Summer exhibition in the James F. Holly Rare Books Room at Daniel J Evans Library. “Freedom Papers” by Sarah Matthews is one of many selected works in the Rare Books Room’s Summer Exhibition : ‘America at 250.’ This multimedia artist book consists of 3 distinctive letterpress printed zines, housed in an antique tin and wrapped in a letterpress printed quilted pouch. Printed on the first zine is the phrase ‘Are we really free?’ layered on paper consisting of a digitally printed background made up of 19th century freedom papers once carried by free African Americans, contemporary REAL ID samples, and stars and stripes. This project draws parallels between historic and contemporary requirements of documentation and criminalization of identity, emphasizing the precarity and perceived value of documented identity. ‘Freedom Papers’ challenges the persistent control and surveillance imposed by the U.S. government. It is an expression of historical resistance, standing in defiance of systems that question who belongs and who is free. ‘We Are Still Here’ by the multidisciplinary artist Devyn Galindo. One of many selected works in The Rare Books Room’s Summer Exhibition : ‘America at 250.’ This book features refined photographic portraiture and graphic design, documenting the pluralism of East L.A.’s femme and female bodied chicanx community. This artist book dismantles notions of silencing, erasure, and reductive colonial perspective imposed on womxn of Mexican heritage. This book documents and symbolizes power, authority, resistance, and resilience being embodied and exuded by womxn of Chicanx identity. Come by Daniel J Evans Library to visit the Rare Books Room and explore this book in person, along with our entire collection and current exhibition!
