Thurston Solid Waste

Thurston Solid Waste This is the official page of the Thurston County Solid Waste Division, your waste prevention resource.

Thurston County Public Works' Solid Waste Division provides resources and information to properly dispose of waste in a safe, convenient, and cost-effective manner while fostering responsible resource use. To accomplish this, the Solid Waste Division manages three disposal facilities in Thurston County, Washington: the Waste and Recovery Center in Hawks Prairie, and the Rainier and Rochester Drop Box facilities. The Division also provides outreach in our community to youth, residents, and businesses on the topics of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste and proper waste disposal.

Wow, way to go Thurston County! 🎉 We'd like to thank the 438 customers who came out to the Free Paint Recycling Collection in Tumwater on September 12 to recycle old and unwanted paint.

You helped us properly manage 79,000+ pounds of paint! That's a BIG win for our local environment 🌲🌊 If you have more paint to get rid of, head over to HazoHouse at the Waste and Recovery Center in Lacey (up to 10 gallons per day) or find other locations listed at WhereDoITakeMy.org. Thanks again to GreenSheenPaint, City of Tumwater, WA - Government, and Port of Olympia for making this happen 🙌

Say hello to Smashquatch! 👋

The Waste and Recovery Center has a new trash compactor, and thanks to our community, it has a name!

After the previous compactor began failing, a new one was installed in fall 2025. The upgrade is helping make operations at the WARC safer and more efficient for our solid waste team. 👷✅

But we couldn’t just call it “the new compactor”, so we asked Thurston County residents to help us name it! More than 130 names were submitted for consideration. 📝

After reviewing the submissions, Public Works staff selected “Smashquatch”, submitted by Thurston County resident Rachel Freiderich, as the winning name. 👏

Thanks to everyone who participated! And congratulations, Rachel! You gave our newest compactor a name as mighty as its job. 🎉
