The WA Senate Members of Color Caucus are shining a spotlight on the bills that advance racial equity, expand opportunity, and ensure every community has a voice.

Together, these priorities reflect our vision of a Washington where diversity is celebrated, every person belongs, and justice guides every decision.

Indian Americans have been an integral part of our state for more than a century. Recognizing Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas as a legislatively recognized day in Washington is about belonging. It is about acknowledging our state’s religious and cultural diversity and making sure our Indian American community feels seen, respected, and celebrated. These observances highlight shared themes of renewal, compassion, and unity.

I am pleased to share that SB 6044 passed the Senate on Tuesday with a vote of 48-1 and now heads to the House for consideration.

It was a joy to welcome members of Washington’s vibrant Indian American community to Olympia for the 77th India Republic Day.

Senate Resolution 8674, sponsored by Senators Dhingra and Slatter, served as a powerful reminder that our democracy is not guaranteed. We must fight for it every single day. Both senators spoke about the shared democratic values of India and the United States and emphasized the importance of recommitting ourselves to the principles that define our democracy.

Every student deserves to feel safe and included in Washington’s schools. Senator T'wina Nobles’ bill SB 5123 expands anti-discrimination protections to include ethnicity, homelessness, immigration status, and neurodivergence, ensuring all students can learn free from bias.

By addressing systemic barriers, this bill helps create equitable learning environments where students of color and other marginalized communities feel valued and protected.

Last week, House Bill 1217—a bill to stabilize renters by ensuring predictable rent increases each year—was heard in the Senate. Sen. Emily Alvarado delivered powerful testimony on the urgent need for housing stability in the face of steep and rising housing costs.

Legacies of exclusion have prevented many communities of color from accessing homeownership opportunities, contributing to the disproportionate number of Black, Indigenous, and people of color who are renters. As a result, they are disproportionately impacted by rising rents. It’s time to provide stability in the housing market and keep our communities housed.

This week, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Latino Legislative Day, an event dedicated to highlighting the contributions of our Latino community here in WA. Our very own Sens. Rebecca Saldaña, Javier Valdez, and Bill Ramos addressed the crowd with passion and purpose, reaffirming our unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and a future where every voice is not only heard but truly valued.

On the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we honored those who fought for justice and equality. Sen. John Lovick introduced a resolution in the Senate to remember this pivotal moment in civil rights history, while Senator T'wina Nobles reminded us of the ongoing work for racial justice. The Members of Color Caucus stands united in the ongoing fight for equity and justice for all.
