Dear McKenny Hawks,
As we get ready to welcome our students back to school, we also want to make sure our McKenny community knows about an important conversation happening across the Olympia School District.
On September 17th, Superintendent Patrick Murphy is expected to bring a recommendation to the Olympia School Board regarding school closures. At this point the district has not announced which schools, if any, will be recommended. So we want to be thoughtful about how we talk about this, and we are not making assumptions about what will be proposed. We simply believe our families and our broader community deserve to know that this conversation is coming, so they have time to learn, listen, ask questions, and participate.
As the McKenny PTO, we also believe very strongly, every school in our district matters. Every school is a community. Every student deserves to be considered with care and have access to a public education at their neighborhood school. Whatever happens next is bigger than any one building. Decisions about schools affect students, families, educators, neighborhoods, programs, and the fabric of our entire Olympia community.
We encourage McKenny families to stay informed through official Olympia School District updates at www.osd.wednet.edu/long-term-planning, as well as community groups like OSD4All. Attend meetings or public hearings when opportunities are announced, email the school board. Ask questions and listen to perspectives from across our district.
We don't know what September 17th will bring. But we do know that our community is stronger when we stay informed, stay connected, and care about all of our schools, not just our own.
All schools matter. All students matter. We’re in this together. 💙
