The 2023 legislative session is going to adjourn in the next few minutes. There’s a lot to be happy about from this year, with huge progress in education, housing, and more. We didn’t do everything I wanted, but this was a very positive session. I talked about some of those issues here:

We just passed our capital budget proposal out of Senate committee - I’m excited about the strong support for it and the big investments we’re making in affordable housing, mental health, public safety, school construction, the environment, and more!

In about an hour it’ll be the cutoff deadline for bills to pass out of the Senate, and I wanted to update you on the top priority issues I’ve been talking with you all session. On five major issues, I’m proud that we’ve passed meaningful legislation on all five!

We’re taking on a serious subject this week - addressing the drug addiction crisis. The legislature needs to make sure people in trouble are getting the help they need, with effective treatment services and support. We also need to make sure people are actually engaging in that treatment. It’s a tough subject with lots of strong feelings, but I’m encouraged by how folks have been working together to find the best possible solution on a very challenging issue. We’ve got to get this right.

Funding special education is one of our top priorities for this session in the K-12 space, and I wanted to introduce you to State Senator Lisa Wellman from the neighboring 41st District who chairs the committee overseeing K-12 education! We talk a little about how important it is to provide the resources and support to help these students and their teachers succeed. Check it out!

Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system, and we’ve got to make sure we’re supporting that workforce. I recorded my weekly video talking about some of our legislation on the issue - helping the nurses we’ve got here in Washington with their student loan payments as well as another bill to cut down on the bureaucracy for out-of-state nurses who might want to move here. I think these can help our nurses and make our healthcare system work better for everyone.

Normally I just talk about my own bills in these videos, but I wanted to take the chance to introduce you to my friend, Sen. Marko Liias, and give him a chance to tell you about his transit-oriented development bill! I’m glad to support this legislation - solving our affordable housing challenge means we need to build a lot more homes, and it makes the most sense to concentrate increased density around transit. Looking forward to voting for this bill on the floor!

My bill to allow the option of digital drivers licenses on your phone got coverage on Geekwire! In these past few years of the pandemic it was so easy having vaccine information on your cell phone, and I thought it would make sense to offer this option for folks when it comes to their driver’s license too! I think the Department of Licensing can make sure this happens in a way that works for people and protects our privacy, and of course it will be completely optional. Learn more about the bill here!

Washington state residents may no longer need to carry a physical driver’s license — as long as they have a smartphone. A new bill in this year’s legislative session aims… Read More

It’s the first day of the 2023 legislative session and I’m excited to be back in person here at the Capitol! I recorded a short video talking about one of my top priorities for this session - public safety.
