"The Old Trails wildfire in northwest Spokane destroyed 640 structures Saturday and overnight into Sunday, and officials are 'still assessing the potential for lives to be lost.'

"Many of the homes burned were inside the city limits of Spokane, according said Cody Rohrbach, Spokane County Fire District 3 fire chief.

"While Saturday wrought devastation and officials say Sunday could still see more homes destroyed, the fire has 'moderated significantly,' according to Tom Engberg, a public information officer with California Incident Management Team 7. "Seattle police Chief Shon Barnes resigned Thursday, following hours of rumors about whether Mayor Katie Wilson would terminate him.

"Deputy Chief Andre Sayles will serve as interim.

"The decision comes after intense criticism of how long it took the Police Department to provide information about Sunday night’s shooting at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle. Barnes was at a law enforcement conference at the time, which spurred further scrutiny, this time of how often he is out of state."

“A new Association of Washington Business (AWB) survey found employers in Washington feel less confident in the state economy and are more likely to plan growth outside the state than in it.

“The group reported that more than one-third of employers plan to expand in another state or country in the next year or two, while 14% said they plan to expand in Washington. The survey drew 378 responses from business owners and operators across Washington between July 8-22, 2026.

“Taxes stood out as the biggest concern in the survey. AWB reported 71% of respondents said the overall tax burden was an important challenge, followed by regulations at 62%, health care costs at 59%, fuel costs at 46% and inflation at 42%.

“The survey also found 16% of respondents planned to relocate their business. Among that group, AWB said three-quarters pointed to taxes as the main reason.”

“Shellfish growers Nate Wight and Amber Taulbee should have been out on the tidelands this month harvesting Pacific oysters for grocery stores, restaurants and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

“But Hood Canal, a pillar of the state’s shellfish economy, a popular draw for recreational harvesters and stewarded by Native people for millennia, has been closed to harvest all summer because of a potentially deadly biotoxin.

“Scientists sounded the alarm in June when a survey at Hoodsport picked up microscopic Alexandrium catenella cells. When ingested by humans, the toxin produced by the alga can lead to paralytic shellfish poisoning, a severe illness that can be deadly. The biotoxin can’t be cooked or frozen out of shellfish.”
