Hello, all! Been a minute… I’ve been meaning to post about these cards for a while now. Every time I had the thought to do it, I would either get sidetracked or just put it off. Perhaps that was by design as today is the start of the Lunar New Year. It is also the Year of the Horse, or, more specifically, the Fire Horse. This happens once every 60 years.
I didn’t do the full Tree of Life spread for the year ahead like I had done the past couple years. Instead, I just stayed open to what I needed to see, like I would any other time pulling cards for myself. But the emphasis was on the year ahead. When I pulled these cards at the beginning of January, I didn’t know this was the Year of the Fire Horse. As we can see in that Knight of Wands, we have quite a fiery horse! The card to its left is the 8 of Cups (Indolence), and to the right, the 8 of Wands (Swiftness).
This was a call to action. Indolence is laziness, slothfulness, and/or spiritual decay. In the card, we see the skies growing dark. The flowers are wilting and the flow of the water is ceasing. If I am honest, that is exactly how I had been feeling for a couple months. A lot of inaction. Feeling like there were things I wanted to do, but not taking the actions necessary to make them happen, or doing them half-assed. Now, we all know that Winter is typically the time for hibernation. Maybe a time for making plans, but not necessarily putting them into action just yet. So, I do try to give myself a little grace, but the fact is, I have been falling short of commitments I have made to myself, and ritually. No more. As a Biblical reference to Indolence, Proverbs 6:6-9 says: “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise! Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in summer and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?”
With the timing of the Lunar New Year, and the realization of The Fire Horse, it is time to move with Swiftness as the 8 of Wands suggests. There are cautions however… One can get burned with all that fire in the Knight of Wands. That exciting, electric Swiftness in the 8 of Wands can flash and quickly dissipate if not properly directed. As Lon Milo DuQuette says of the Knight of Wands: “It is the portrait of someone who is riding a rocket, and that can be very risky. If the rocket isn’t aimed properly, he or she misses the target. If there is not enough fuel, he or she crashes. If there is too much fuel, the person explodes. But if everything goes well, it is the most spectacular of successes.”
So, it’s time to get off my ass and get back into action. But in doing so, I pray for the wisdom to move with calculated direction. To proceed in such a way that my actions, and the results thereof, are sustained. Let us not fizzle out too soon, or push so hard we explode. May this Year of the Fire Horse be “the most spectacular of successes” for us all!
Much love!
