Curious about how the hockey program at UNO got started? Visit Archives and Special Collection’s recent exhibit located on the first floor of the Criss Library! This exhibit, curated by ASC student employee Emma, includes a flat case located outside the Archives and Special Collections and a new display inside ASC.

The flat case shares the history of UNO Hockey with materials that showcase the people and groups that began the UNO Hockey program and continue to make it what it is today! The display highlights important names like former head coach Mike Kemp, Bev and Jerry Sanders, the UNO Hockey Committee, and the Blue Line Club.

Inside the ASC department is a new display about UNO hockey player, alumni, and current head coach, Mike Gabinet. The case displays a stick signed by Gabinet, hockey pucks, and photographs.

In the summer of 1967, motorists traveling along Highway 20 were greeted by an unexpected sight: a lone horseman making his way across Nebraska. Newspapers called it the "Ride of the Century." Communities welcomed him as he passed through town. But Dr. Whit M. Dawkins wasn't attempting to set a record or recreate the Old West. He was determined to change how Nebraskans remembered it.

As Nebraska celebrated its Centennial, Dawkins rode 450 miles from the Wyoming border to South Sioux City. His goal was to remind Nebraskans that Black cowboys helped build the American West.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Dawkins earned his veterinary degree from Tuskegee Institute before moving to Nebraska in 1957 to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Beyond his historic ride, he became an active supporter of the Great Plains Black History Museum, helping preserve the history he worked so hard to bring into public view.

Today, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other records preserved in the Great Plains Black History Museum collections document a remarkable journey that challenged historical memory one mile at a time.

Final update from ASC intern Raul!

During my internship I have been able to see some of the work being an archivist entails and the process of maintaining, preserving, and organizing a collection. Additionally, my work in archives allowed me to get a glimpse of the work done by the UNO Student Government through their records. I also learned how to use ArchivesSpace which is a database used to manage, describe, and provide public access to their collections. In ArchivesSpace I was responsible for creating and uploading subseries or categories for the collection I was working on, making the material findable by researchers.

I also learned the volume of documents archivists need to review and sort through, to be able to determine what will be useful to future researchers. I had the opportunity to learn the process required to prepare and curate an exhibit such as selecting the documents and writing labels. If you are interested, I encourage you to stop by the UNO Criss Library to see some of the work and documents from the UNO Student Government Records on display.

As you make your way back to campus for the new semester, make sure you check out the exhibit in the Osborne Gallery highlighting the people and history of the UNO Library. Located on the main floor of the UNO Criss Library, “Groundbreaking and Golden Jubilee: 50 Years of the UNO Library and the People who make it Possible” celebrates half a century of the UNO Library, 1976-2026, through photos and posters of people and events.
