On this day in 1787, after months of hard debate, the delegates in Philadelphia signed the Constitution of the United States.

They did not all think alike. They argued over power, representation, and the shape of the Union. Yet they set those differences aside, bound by a shared conviction that liberty was worth the struggle, and that no generation should live under unchecked government. Many of them spoke of Providence as they worked. They were building something meant to outlast them, a framework of limited powers, separated authority, and rights that do not come from the state.

We the People inherited that gift. The Constitution is not a relic. It is the charter that still asks every generation to keep a republic: to restrain power, protect freedom of conscience, speech, and person, and remember that government is the servant, not the master.

Today we honor those who signed it, and those who have since defended it. Gratitude is not nostalgia. It is a duty, to read the document, to understand it, and to pass on a free country worthy of the men who, despite their disagreements, came together so that we might remain free.
