The school is proud to serve Pre-K through 5th grade students, with small class sizes of about 16-20 students in primary classes and 18-20 students in the intermediate classes. Sherman is a school with approximately 240 students and approximately 46 staff members. The principal of Sherman Elementary is Ms. This is Ms. Fillbach's 4th year as principal at Sherman. Fillbach brings with her experience
in a variety of school districts that include the Washington, DC area and Olathe, Kansas prior to joining OPS in 2001. She has worked with students in elementary and middle school settings, with an instructional focus in the areas of Reading/Language Arts and Social Studies. Fillbach has served in the educational role of a classroom teacher, Dean of Students, curriculum supervisor, and principal. She sets high expectations for all the students and staff at Sherman Elementary and recognizes the importance of having high performing students and staff in each classroom! A strong focus is on meeting the needs of each student, each day with a strong instructional focus and meeting the needs of the whole child. Sherman students are ages Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade. Sherman is approximately 96.5% Free/Reduced lunch. We are 28% English Second Language students, and 25% Special Education students. Our mobility rate is 22%, but our attendance rate is 95.1%! Our student demographics from 2013-14 were:
114 Hispanic, 95 Caucasian, 8 Two or More Races, 5 Asian/Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 3 American Indian, and 12 Black or African American. We have a staff that consists of both veteran and new teachers. Sherman has one ESL teacher, and two Resource teachers. Sherman feeds our students breakfast every morning through our Grab N Go Program. We provide fruits and vegetables through our Fruit and Vegetable Program. We have an after school program that provides approximately 75 students the opportunity for enrichment activities, a daily dinner snack, and homework time. We are fortunate to have Adopt-A-School Partnerships through AAUW, Lozier Corporation, Mr. and Mrs. Lykke, and North Omaha Rotary Club. Sherman is a P4K school, which focuses on preparing for learning and career opportunities beyond high school and goal-setting. Sherman staff sets the goal of meeting the needs of EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY!!!
