🩺 Did You Know? Kidney Transplant Patients Often Have THREE Kidneys
In most kidney transplants, doctors don’t remove the old, non-functioning kidneys. That means after surgery, a person can actually have three kidneys inside their body.
Surgeons usually leave the original kidneys in place because removing them would make the operation longer, more complicated, and riskier, with a higher chance of bleeding or other complications. Even though the old kidneys no longer work, they typically don’t cause any harm.
The new kidney is placed in the lower abdomen, where it’s easier to connect to major blood vessels and the bladder. This method makes the surgery safer, faster, and helps patients recover more quickly.
