🩺 Did You Know? Kidney Transplant Patients Often Have THREE Kidneys

In most kidney transplants, doctors don’t remove the old, non-functioning kidneys. That means after surgery, a person can actually have three kidneys inside their body.

Surgeons usually leave the original kidneys in place because removing them would make the operation longer, more complicated, and riskier, with a higher chance of bleeding or other complications. Even though the old kidneys no longer work, they typically don’t cause any harm.

The new kidney is placed in the lower abdomen, where it’s easier to connect to major blood vessels and the bladder. This method makes the surgery safer, faster, and helps patients recover more quickly.

Medical science is amazing! 🙌

Another first! Our Heart and Vascular team recently completed the first renal denervation procedure in Omaha and Laura Ramirez was the first patient. The Medtronic Symplicity procedure is a minimally invasive technology to help reduce high blood pressure — it targets nerves near the kidneys that can become overactive and cause high blood pressure. Congrats to Laura and our ❤️ team!

Appreciate for supporting the Fix It Act — a bipartisan effort to use existing savings to cut healthcare costs and extend the ACA premium tax credits for 2 years. Cracking down on waste and abuse is the first step to rebuilding trust and accountability in our system.

Congratulations to our transplant team for a record year for organ transplantation!

In 2024, Nebraska Medical Center achieved new records for the number of kidney, liver, and lung transplants performed in a year:

• 188 kidney transplants
• 150 liver transplants
• 17 lung transplants
• 41 heart transplants (fourth busiest year ever)

Thirteen patients received transplants involving multiple organs that included a kidney or a liver.

Living donors were involved in 59 transplants this year. If you'd like to learn more about becoming a living donor, you'll find more information here: https://bit.ly/4hSv2oY
