πŸš²πŸ›΄ Ride Smart. Ride Safe. Omro!

The City of Omro and Omro Police Department are working to educate our community about the rules for e-bikes and e-scooters. Whether you are a rider, parent, caregiver, pedestrian, or motorist, knowing the rules helps keep everyone safe.

Important reminders for riders:

πŸͺ– Under 18? A helmet is required when operating or riding as a passenger on an e-bike or e-scooter.
🚢 Pedestrians have the right-of-way. Slow down, yield, and give people plenty of room.
πŸŒ‰ Walk it across pedestrian bridges. Dismount your bicycle, e-bike, or e-scooter before crossing the Fox River pedestrian footbridge.
πŸ™οΈ No sidewalk riding in the C-1 Downtown Commercial District.
🚲 Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on City sidewalks.
πŸ›΄ E-scooters may not exceed 20 MPH, with lower speed limits applying in certain locations and to younger riders.
πŸ’‘ Be visible after dark. Proper lighting and reflectors are required.
🚫 No reckless riding, racing, wheelies, stunts, or other unsafe operation.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Parents: Know the age rules. Different restrictions apply to riders under ages 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18.

The Common Council emphasized education before enforcement when adopting these regulations. Our goal is to make sure riders understand the rules and have the information they need to make safe choices.

Please share this post and talk with the young riders in your household.

BE COURTEOUS. BE CAREFUL. BE OMRO PROUD.

Parents & Young Riders: Know the New Rules πŸš²πŸ›΄
PARENTS & YOUNG RIDERS β€” PLEASE READ & SHARE!
The City of Omro has adopted new rules for e-bikes and e-scooters under Ordinance C #512, along with updated bicycle sidewalk rules under Ordinance C #514. Our goal is education first and improved public safety.
Here are the rules families especially need to know:
β€’ πŸͺ– UNDER 18 = HELMET REQUIRED. Anyone under 18 operating or riding as a passenger on an e-bike or e-scooter on public property must wear a properly fitted and securely fastened helmet.
β€’ 🌳 KNOW WHERE YOU CAN RIDE: Different rules apply to Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks, trails, playgrounds and in parks.
β€’ πŸ›΄ UNDER 14: An e-scooter may not be operated on public property at a speed over 15 MPH.
β€’ 🚲 UNDER 16: A Class 3 e-bike may not be operated except as otherwise authorized by Wisconsin law.
β€’ 🚲 UNDER 12: A Class 2 e-bike may not be operated on a public street unless the child is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or an adult designated by the parent/guardian.
β€’ πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ UNDER 10: A child may not operate any e-bike or e-scooter on a public street or public property unless under direct parental supervision.
β€’ 🚫 NO STUNTS OR RACING: No wheelies, tricks, jumping curbs or public improvements, racing, or riding in a way that causes pedestrians to take evasive action.
β€’ 🚢 PEDESTRIANS COME FIRST: Riders must yield and use care around people walking.
β€’ πŸŒ‰ WALK ACROSS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES: E-bikes and e-scooters must be dismounted and walked across pedestrian/footbridges. Regular bicycles must also be walked across the Fox River pedestrian footbridge under C #514.
β€’ πŸŒ™ LIGHTS AFTER DARK: E-bikes and e-scooters operated between sunset and sunrise need a white front light and red rear reflector or light, each visible from at least 500 feet.
Parents and guardians also have responsibilities. Ordinance C #512 provides that a parent or guardian may not knowingly permit a minor to violate these requirements and must exercise reasonable supervision regarding age restrictions, helmets, passengers and other safety provisions. Copies of the ordinance are available in hard copy at Omro City Hall until the new ordinance language is processed and published on the city's website in the municipal code.
EDUCATION FIRST. SAFETY ALWAYS.
Before your child heads out on an e-bike or e-scooter, please talk with them about the rules. Wear the helmet. Know where you can ride. Slow down. Watch for pedestrians. And ride responsibly.

We don't have a huge crew or tons of equipment, but we are there to help our friends and neighbors where we can.

I want to send a big thank you to our team members that volunteered their Saturday to help out.
