For the last couple of weeks, we've been gearing up and preparing for grass fire season. This is by far our busiest time of year. We have two meetings a month, where we focus on training and keeping our equipment in working order. Sometimes, there isn't enough time during our regular meetings to get everything done. We'll pick an afternoon that works for most guys (sometimes a last-second text from the chief) to continue maintenance on equipment and trucks, usually coming in on a weeknight after already working their full-time jobs and staying late into the night. Not only do they donate their time, but also their own tools. We love volunteering our time to Onaga and the surrounding communities. The support we receive is always top-notch and is very much appreciated!

Last night, we took advantage of the fine weather and conducted some rescue training. Over the past few months, Onaga Firemen have had several opportunities to attend out-of-station training to learn new skills and operate new rescue equipment. Last night, we put the skills we've learned into practice with our own training exercise. Over the past couple of years, we have been gradually updating our rescue equipment, which is battery-powered. Although it is heavy, it is much quicker and significantly speeds up the rescue process.

We couldn't have purchased this equipment without the help of the community. The support we receive from Onaga and the surrounding communities is fantastic and never disappoints. It's because of the support and donations that we can upgrade our equipment and continue to provide Onaga and the surrounding areas with the best service possible.

It was a busy weekend for the Onaga Firemen. On Saturday morning, Martin Henneberg, Matt Marten, Luke Marten, and Mitchell Bosse headed to Bern, Kansas, for another fire training. This training was put on by the Kansas State Firefighter Association (KSFFA) but hosted by the Bern Fire Department. Training started at 8 a.m. with a four-hour hands-on vehicle extrication training. Firemen were given a scenario, had to communicate a plan, and execute that plan. Firemen worked with guys from different departments, tools, and techniques. The afternoon class was another four-hour hands-on skills trailer training. At the start of the training, firemen reviewed some of the basics of handling, throwing, and tying off ladders. The skills trailer replicates the inside of a structure fire with tight hallways and small spaces that firemen have to weave in and out of. Instructors also created fog to replicate smoke with zero visibility. Sunday's training started at 8 a.m. with a four-hour classroom training on ventilation and ventilation tactics. On Saturday afternoon, several firemen took time to cut Christmas trees for the homes on Main Street. The Fire Department has done this for the last few years.

FRIENDLY REMINDER TIME! It's that time of year again when most people check their heaters to ensure everything is working correctly. When checking your heaters, don't overlook your CO2 (carbon dioxide) detectors. You should have a detector on every level of your house, especially next to your heating unit. A detector will sound even before you start feeling the symptoms of too much exposure. CO2 is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can cause many different symptoms, which, if left unchecked for too long, can lead to fatigue and possibly death. If an alarm sounds, exit your home and call 911 immediately. So, make sure those alarms are working properly to stay safe this winter.

This past weekend, 5 Onaga Firemen left Friday night and headed to Wichita to attend a two-day fire training event called Wichita Hot. The training started Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with classroom lectures from fire instructors who have experienced intense fire situations throughout their careers. These instructors weren't just Kansas firefighters; some came from Boston, New York, Washington D.C., and Virginia, which all had very educational lectures that we can institute in our own department. Sunday classes started at 8 a.m. with hands-on training, which also lasted most of the day. These two-day trainings were extremely educational, and we are going to incorporate that knowledge and put it to work with more in-house trainings. We love serving this community and the surrounding areas.

A few pictures from our fire meeting last night. We conducted training on deploying and filling our portable water tank. This tank is situated on the side of our tanker truck (439), and when deployed, it has a capacity to hold up to 3,000 gallons of water, which is identical to the capacity of our tanker truck. We utilize this primarily for rural fires where water sources may be several miles away. We also conducted pump training and deployed hose lines from our pumper truck (436).

With school back in session, the buses are on the move again!
As a reminder, if the bus lights are flashing & the stop arm is out → traffic from all directions must STOP.
It’s not just the law—it’s protecting our kids.

We're a little late posting, but thank you to everyone who showed up and supported us last Thursday. It was another great success because of you folks who continue to support our department! We hope you enjoyed the burritos, and if you didn't get one, there's always next year! Thank you for always supporting your local firemen!
