It’s time for one of our favorite community traditions! Come out for Ukwakhwa’s 7th Annual Barter Market, a morning of trading, sharing, eating, and spending time together.

🚫 THIS IS A NO-CASH MARKET!
Bring your treasures and come ready to trade. Handmade items, harvested goods from your garden, homemade canned goods, seeds, foods, crafts, and other useful or special items are welcome.

You do not need to set up a table to participate! Fill a bag, basket, or wagon with things you’d like to barter and walk around the market making trades.

SETTING UP TO BARTER?
🌱 Arrive at 8AM for setup
🌱 Bring your own table, chairs, and canopy
🌱 Bartering begins at 9AM

Come hungry! Burritos will be available first come, first served.

We’ll close out the market by eating together. Chef Jenny Garcia will be cooking our lunch, also available first come, first served.

Bartering reminds us that value does not always have to be measured in dollars. There is value in what we grow, what we make, what we preserve, and what we can share with one another.

🌾 Happy Wild Rice Week! 🌾

The Oneida High Freshwater Scholars Program is helping inspire the next generation of freshwater scientists and conservationists through hands-on learning rooted in environmental stewardship and Oneida culture.

Led by Robert Fish, National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) Tribal Engagement at UW-Green Bay, and Dr. Lois Stevens, Associate Professor of First Nations Studies at UW-Green Bay, the program is a collaboration between UW-Green Bay's First Nations Education Center, UW-Green Bay NERR Tribal Engagement, Oneida Nation High School, and the Oneida Nation LEAF Division. 🤝🌿

This year, scholars monitored wild rice from its floating leaf stage through harvest, gaining firsthand experience with one of the area's most culturally and environmentally significant resources. Students harvested rice for their families while learning about freshwater ecosystems, conservation principles, and field research techniques. 🌾💧

Throughout the academic year, scholars participated in environmental science activities, First Nations Studies, and hands-on field experiences. Their work culminated in a summer freshwater conservation project that benefited both the students and the Oneida Community. 💚

As the program continues to grow, organizers hope to expand opportunities for scholars to share their knowledge with younger students and help build environmental awareness across the Oneida Reservation. Supported through a six-year grant awarded in two-year increments, the program currently serves five students each year. 🌱✨

Everything Sprouts, LLC, based in Minneapolis, MN is expanding its voluntary recall of sprouts to include certain lots of Robust Radish Sprout Mix because it has the potential to be contaminated with Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) or Salmonella bacteria.

🌱 Oneida Environmental Staff Meet with EPA Regional Administrator 🌱

On August 26, 2026, Oneida Environmental staff met with Anne Vogel, EPA Regional Administrator for Region 5, for a relationship-building tour of the Oneida Reservation.

Environmental staff James Snitgen, Victoria Flowers, Maureen Perkins, and Nathan Pelky toured several locations with Anne to view restoration projects and demonstrate how previous brownfield-designated areas have been repurposed into functional environmental areas for our membership to enjoy through the use of EPA funds and NRDA restoration funds.

ℹ️ A brownfield designation is an official legal status given to property where expanding, redeveloping, or reusing the land is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination.

The tour also highlighted the reinvigoration of cultural aspects of our environment, including the planting of medicinal plants. Oneida enrolled member Maureen Perkins shared how the Oneida Nation's focus on strengthening our relationship with the environment has been paramount across departments, resulting in interdepartmental environmental activities for the community to enjoy.
