A closed door in a fire can buy you time.

This video shows just how much of a difference something as simple as shutting a bedroom door can make. Heat, smoke, and toxic gases spread fast in modern fires, but a closed door can help slow that down and give occupants more time to escape or be rescued.

Tonight before bed, take a second and close your bedroom doors. It’s a simple habit that can truly save lives.

🚨 TRAFFIC SIGNAL PREEMPTION SYSTEM NOW ACTIVE 🚨

Our emergency vehicles now utilize the EMTRAC Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) system to help responders move through intersections more safely and efficiently during emergency calls. When an emergency vehicle approaches an equipped intersection with lights and sirens activated, the system communicates with the traffic signal and temporarily changes the light pattern to help clear traffic ahead of responding units.

This technology helps reduce response times while also lowering the risk of serious intersection crashes involving emergency vehicles and the public.

Because of this system, motorists may occasionally notice traffic lights operating differently than normal during an active emergency response. Please do not assume a traffic signal is malfunctioning or attempt to “guess” the traffic pattern. Signal timing may temporarily change to allow emergency vehicles to safely pass through the area.

As always:
🚒 Move to the right for emergency vehicles
🚑 Stay alert at intersections
🚓 Never attempt to follow emergency vehicles through traffic

These systems are designed to improve safety for both responders and the citizens we serve.

Chief Seehusen spent time today training Oneonta Fire & Rescue crews on our new MSA air monitoring systems used for hazardous materials response and dangerous atmosphere detection.

These monitors help firefighters identify invisible hazards such as carbon monoxide, gas leaks, oxygen-deficient environments, and other toxic atmospheres — helping keep both our crews and citizens safe during emergencies.

Training and preparation matter, and we’re proud to continue investing in equipment and education that better protects our community.

Here’s the reality—going to the Emergency Room by ambulance does not get you seen faster.

We receive calls all the time where this was the expectation, so let’s clear it up.

At the hospital, patients are seen based on how serious their condition is—not how they arrived. Whether you walk in, are dropped off, or go by ambulance, you will be triaged the same way. If your condition is not urgent, you may still wait.

When you call 911 for non-emergencies just to get quicker access, it ties up ambulances and firefighters who may be needed for life-threatening situations—heart attacks, strokes, serious accidents. That delay can have real consequences for someone else in your community.

There’s also a financial side. Ambulance transport is expensive, and if it’s determined to be medically unnecessary, your insurance may not cover the cost—leaving you with a significant bill.

We’re here for emergencies. If you’re experiencing a true emergency, call us—we will respond immediately and provide the care you need.

But if it’s not an emergency, please consider other options like urgent care or contacting your primary care provider.

🔥 Burn Ban Reminder 🔥

Despite some recent rain, we still remain under a No Burn Order at this time.

We have responded to several calls lately involving outdoor fires that have gotten out of control. Because conditions can still allow fire to spread quickly, outdoor burning of any type remains prohibited.

We appreciate everyone doing their part to help keep our community safe. Please continue to monitor our page for updates regarding the burn ban status.
