Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Normandy, when more than 156,000 Allied service members from 13 countries stormed 5 beaches in Normandy, France, by sea and air, considered the largest amphibious invasion ever assembled.

This operation lasted until August 1944, when Paris and all of northern France were liberated from the control of N**i Germany, and it is marked by historians as the beginning of the end of World War II.

While The Battle of Normandy is considered a successful mission, it’s estimated that 10,300 soldiers from the Allied nations were killed, missing, or wounded in the initial landings in Normandy.

Today we honor those brave individuals who served not only to protect their countries, but our world. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

Lieutenant Brenton Truitt, Jr.
End of Watch: June 3, 1970

Today, we pause to remember and honor the life, service, and ultimate sacrifice of Opelika Police Department Lieutenant Brenton Truitt, Jr.

Fifty-six years ago today, Lt. Truitt met with a concerned citizen who had been unable to reach her ill brother for several days. Answering the call to help, Lt. Truitt and his fellow officers went to the Auburn Street residence to conduct a welfare check. After a family member helped them gain entry, the officers began searching the home to ensure the man's safety.

Tragically, as Lt. Truitt opened the kitchen door, he was shot point blank with a shotgun. After a brief gun battle, fellow officers apprehended the suspect, who was later sentenced to life in prison. Lt. Truitt was rushed to Lee County Hospital (now East Alabama Medical Center), where he succumbed to his fatal injuries.

Lt. Truitt laid down his life while performing one of the most fundamental duties of law enforcement: trying to help a citizen in need. Today, and every day, we honor his bravery. We thank Lt. Truitt for his dedicated service and his profound sacrifice to the citizens of Opelika.
