We had a fantastic evening at the Opelika Chamber Valor Awards, where Chief Clifton had the distinct honor of presenting two very special awards to exceptional members of our team:
• Officer of the Year: Officer Jeremiah Gooden
• Communications Operator of the Year: James "Nate" Broach

Officer Jeremiah Gooden sets the standard for proactive policing, leading the department in arrests, reports, and traffic enforcement while constantly working behind the scenes to keep our community safe. His extraordinary composure and tactical skill were recently demonstrated when he single-handedly de-escalated a high-risk situation with an armed suspect, taking them into custody without injury. His leadership, drive, and commitment to public safety inspire us all!

Operator James "Nate" Broach is a vital lifeline for both our citizens and officers. Known for his rapid mastery of 911 dispatch technology and unwavering calm under pressure, Nate recently earned his Communications Training Officer certification and was named APCO's Rookie of the Year. His quick thinking and patience were crucial during a critical emergency where he successfully navigated a major language barrier, keeping a wounded caller calm while guiding officers to the scene to deliver life-saving care.

THANK YOU to the Opelika Chamber of Commerce and all of the sponsors who made this evening possible. We also want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the other Valor Award recipients from our neighboring agencies—thank you for your service and dedication to protecting our region!

It is with heavy hearts that the Opelika Police Department announces the passing of retired Lieutenant Cleve Clark, who passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

Lieutenant Clark dedicated over three decades of selfless service to our community. He began his career with OPD in May 1978 in Communications before becoming a police officer when he turned 21. He faithfully served the citizens of Opelika until his retirement on January 1, 2012. Throughout his 33-plus years of service, Lt. Clark exemplified leadership, integrity, and unwavering dedication to protecting others.

We extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the Clark family, his friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Thank you for your service, Lieutenant.

We had the best time wrapping up Community Helpers Week with First Baptist Academy. Our officers loved hanging out with the students and giving them an up-close look at our SWAT gear, Patrol vehicles, and the K9 unit in action. The fun didn't stop there—we also had the privilege of hosting the 1st graders right here at the police department for a behind-the-scenes tour. Thank you for inviting us to be part of your day, FBA! 💙🚓✨
