A Lee County jury has convicted Preston McAdory of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance.

The case began with a traffic stop and probable cause search conducted by Auburn Police officers. Approximately 90 grams of a synthetic controlled substance were recovered. The investigation revealed that McAdory and his co-defendants intended to lace ma*****na ci******es with the synthetic substance and then sell the altered ma*****na.

McAdory's criminal history includes multiple prior convictions for the sale/distribution of controlled substances and violent offenses. Based on McAdory's prior felony criminal history, Alabama requires a mandatory life sentence upon conviction for trafficking.

While addiction is a factor in many narcotics cases, it is important to recognize that not every drug offender is an addict, and not every drug crime is driven by substance abuse. Some cases involve individuals who choose to profit from the manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs. The reality is that every case is different. Lee County strongly supports rehabilitation and recovery through programs such as Drug Court, Veterans Court, Pretrial Diversion, and substance abuse treatment programs offered within the Lee County Jail. Successful participation in these programs is a factor considered when determining the most appropriate resolution for many narcotics offenses.

However, this case, and others like it, involves far more than personal drug use. We recognize there is an important distinction between individuals dealing with addition and those who choose to profit from the manufacture and sale of illegal drugs. Our office works closely with treatment and diversion programs to deal fairly with those committed to recovery, but we will continue to aggressively prosecute traffickers and dealers whose actions contribute to addiction, crime, and the victimization of others in our community.

We extend our appreciation to the Auburn Police Department for their proactive police work and thorough investigation, which uncovered a significant quantity of controlled substances intended for distribution. We also commend Senior Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Duerr for his dedication, preparation, and successful prosecution of the case through trial. Additionally, we are grateful to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for their expertise. Alabama District Attorneys Association

Today, William Derek Smith (57) was convicted of Trafficking in Methamphetamine. The jury also found Smith possessed a firearm while trafficking a narcotic resulting in a sentencing enhancement.

The Opelika Police Department received information that Smith, driving an older red pickup truck, would be transporting a large quantity of methamphetamine in Opelika. Based on the information, detectives located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop after observing a traffic violation. A K-9 officer alerted to the presence of drugs inside the vehicle. Just over 50 grams of methamphetamine, additional narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and two fi****ms were recovered. Smith later admitted the methamphetamine belonged to him.

Smith was arrested for another felony offense while on bond. Based on Smith’s prior felony criminal history, Alabama law requires a mandatory life sentence upon conviction for trafficking.

Narcotics-related offenses continue to account for a large percentage of criminal arrests in Lee County, and these cases often go hand-in-hand with other serious criminal activity that impacts the safety of our community.

We appreciate the outstanding investigative work of Detective Alejandro Reyna, as well as the hard work of Assistant District Attorney Madison Grantham in securing this conviction and holding a repeat offender accountable.

Scammers be scammin’!

The FBI is aware of a service disruption affecting an online Learning Management System (LMS). This disruption has impacted schools, educational institutions, and students across the country.

If you are contacted directly by anyone claiming to have your data, we recommend you not send payment or respond to their demands. By receiving a message, that does not necessarily mean your personal information has been compromised. Threat actors often exaggerate or fabricate their access to sensitive or personal information to prompt payment from victims. We encourage individuals to be cautious of unsolicited emails, calls, or texts claiming to be from your school, the LMS provider, or law enforcement and to verify the contact through known channels before responding.

We understand that the immediate concern for individuals/students is determining what, if any, of their data or other sensitive information may have been exposed. At this time, the strongly recommended course is to await formal guidance from your educational institution regarding the scope of the incident and the nature of any affected data.

If you believe you have been impacted by the attack, please file a complaint at ic3.gov.

All crimes can have a devastating effect on those who have been impacted, as well as their families who may need help coping with what happened. Visit fbi.gov for more resources on coping with the impact of crime:
