The City of Opelika has been serving its citizens for over 100 years. Low-cost, reliable, and community-owned are all key components of Opelika Power Services. We are proud to be a hometown “public power” electric utility. Every day, every week, every year since 1911, Opelika Power Services has powered your days and nights. The first electric plant in Opelika was a small, private owned plant built
around the year 1890 by Mr. The location was the site of Frazier’s Gin, which today is S. This plant operated only at nights and furnished power only for lights at that time. It operated on two small steam engines. In 1910 the citizens of Opelika floated a bond issue of $30,000.00 and built a City Light and Power Plant on First Avenue. In 1917 the Alabama Power Company entered into a franchise with the local company to furnish the necessary power for the city’s needs. This first plant was very small, having only 250 KW. In 1981, Opelika Light & Power became a member of Alabama Municipal Electric Authority. Mayor Gary Fuller and the Opelika City Council made a commitment to the citizens of Opelika. The City of Opelika is committed to providing the same reliable power service and will be moving the city forward into the future as the first community in Alabama to offer 100% fiber to the premise. On October 16, 2013, OPS officially launched fiber to the home video, voice and data services. OPS is the first municipality in the State of Alabama to offer fiber services to it's citizens. Opelika, Alabama is making history, we are Alabama's First GIG City. This is an official City of Opelika Facebook account.
