It was a pleasure to attend the Juneteenth Celebration Gala and support the amazing work done by Ms. Rebecca Henry and the Creole Heritage Folklife Center.

For more than 40 years, Ms. Henry has been a driving force in bringing awareness of Juneteenth to St. Landry Parish. As we move closer to our nation's 250th year of independence, Juneteenth reminds us of the meaning of freedom and the progress that has been made toward ensuring that all Americans can enjoy the blessings of liberty. It is a day to reflect on our history, celebrate how far we've come, and remember that our strength as a nation comes from our common bond as Americans - that independence is not complete until all are truly free.

On a different note, Juneteenth has always been especially important to me because it also happens to be my wife's birthday. So while we were celebrating history, freedom, and community, I also celebrate her. Happy 45th Birthday to my beautiful wife!!
