SHERIFF RELEASES STATEMENT ON VIRAL “CAT IN THE HAT” SOCIAL MEDIA TREND

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz states, “It has come to our attention that a national social media trend involving rather sinister-looking costumes or other likeness of Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat involved in trespass or appearance in schools or other areas. Many of these enactments use fear tactics to incite or otherwise disrupt operations at schools and other public areas. These acts can have rather serious consequences. Louisiana State Statute 14:313* expressly prohibits the wearing of masks, hoods or other disguises in public places. The penalty upon conviction can be imprisonment for no less than six months to a maximum of three years.”

Sheriff Guidroz continues, “Trespassing wearing a disguise to scare people can lead to potential danger, involvement with local law enforcement and possible arrest. Using this trend to incite fear at our schools and other protected areas will land you in jail. Parents, talk to your children about this and other potentially dangerous acts. Watching viral videos is one thing, acting out on them or attempting to imitate the criminal acts being portrayed will get you a new address; jail.”

A few months back, I explained how St. Landry Crime Stoppers actually works. Today, I would like to provide some statistics to show what we have done.

Since its inception, the St. Landry Crime Stoppers organization has handled more than 4,500 verified tips. 361 tips were assigned to various divisions within the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, which led to 354 arrests. The amount of money paid for tips has reached $98,447. The amount of property recovered is over 1.1 million dollars. Tips received by us also go to various agencies throughout the United States, to include the F.B.I. and other state and local agencies.

We believe that the success of St. Landry Crime Stoppers and the Crime Stopper organizations throughout the United States is because of the Crime Stopper U.S.A. organization, our P3 app and mostly because of you, the anonymous tipster.
