HEADS UP AND UMBRELLAS OUT!

WEATHER ADVISORY –
SHERIFF ASKS CITIZENS TO PREPARE FOR HEAVY RAINFALL

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz advises,” Current weather forecasts indicate that, over the next three days, rainfall amounts could be as high as 7-15 inches, with some areas receiving less amounts. We are asking our citizens to prepare for this weather event; secure property that may float or drift away, this will prevent drainage systems from clogging. Be aware that some roads may flood; never attempt to drive through flooded streets! You could send water into homes or worse, become stranded in a vehicle taking on water.”

Sheriff Guidroz concludes, “Parish Government is providing sandbags and performing flood mitigation efforts, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is readying our rescue vehicles and personnel. Do your due diligence and prepare yourselves.”

WORLD ELDERLY ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

June 15, 2026, is World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day, our senior citizens should not live a life of abuse. Just like our Special Needs Section, the Elderly Abuse Section is dear to my heart.

We have created section that includes elderly abuse which is ran by highly trained deputies that are responsible for the protection of adults over the age 60. This section also includes adults with disabilities (infirmed) for individuals ages 18 - 59 years of age. This section concentrates on acts or omissions which result in physical, emotional abuse, and neglect inflicted by caregivers and from self-neglect by the individual themselves. Louisiana law also protects seniors from acts of financial exploitation and extortion.

Physical abuse is pushing, hitting, or restraining an elder. S*xual exploitation is involving an elder in any act or situation that is s*xual in nature without their consent. Neglect includes withholding of medication, medical care, food, personal care, utilities, daily necessities, and overmedication.

Calls or reports of abuse can be made to the Governor’s Office of Elderly and Adult Protection at 1-800-898-4910 or Captain Lynnette Chavis with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office Elderly Affairs division at 337-948-6516 extension 3111.

LOUISIANA ENDS VEHICLE INSPECTION STICKER REQUIREMENT – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

During this past legislative session, House Bill 1085 by Representative Bagley, regarding the elimination of vehicle inspection stickers, has been signed into law by Governor Landry and is now ACT 701. The link to ACT 701 has been attached at the end of this “Did You Know” for your full review. Realizing many of you may have questions about the change in the law, I felt it necessary to push this information out to each of you.

According to the new law, personal, non-commercial vehicles registered in Louisiana will NO LONGER be required to display a vehicle inspection sticker beginning January 1, 2027. Additionally, from June 30, 2026, through January 1, 2027, law enforcement officers are prohibited from issuing citations solely for failing to display or produce a certificate of inspection. We will continue to keep you updated as the new process takes shape.

Below is the information the Louisiana State Police released on social media for your review:

Louisiana motorists should be aware of an important change to state law regarding vehicle inspection stickers.

During the 2026 Regular Legislative Session, HB 1085 was passed by the Louisiana Legislature and signed into law by Governor Jeff Landry. Under this new law, personal, non-commercial vehicles registered in Louisiana will no longer be required to display a vehicle inspection sticker beginning January 1, 2027.

Additionally, from June 30, 2026, through January 1, 2027, law enforcement officers are prohibited from issuing citations solely for failing to display or produce a certificate of inspection. As a result, Louisiana State Police have immediately ceased enforcement of inspection sticker violations.

As with any change in Louisiana law, our focus during this transition period will be on educating motorists, answering questions, and helping the public understand how these changes affect them moving forward.

Motorists are reminded that all other traffic laws and vehicle equipment requirements remain in effect. Drivers should continue to ensure their vehicles are safe and properly maintained before traveling on Louisiana roadways.

ACT 701 can be read in its entirety here: https://legis.la.gov/legis/ViewDocument.aspx?d=1290251
