Obituary for Robert "BOB" Stokes at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel - Scott City

We regret to announce the passing of Retired Chief Bob Stokes. Our prayers are with his family.
Chief Stokes was a crucial part in the Oran Rescue Squad and the fire department. If it were not for his dedication the district would not be what it is today.

Robert BOB Stokes Bob Stokes, son of the late Willie Stokes and Eleanor Bingley Stokes was born on November 27, 1944 in Lilbourn, Missouri and departed this life on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 76 years. Mr. Stokes

This afternoon your Oran firefighters were dispatched to the area of State Highway W and State Highway 77 for a reported structure fire. An Engine, Ladder, and two Tankers responded as well as an Engine and Tanker from Scott County Rural Fire District. Crews arrived on scene to a working fire and initiated an offensive attack and quickly brought the fire under control. All occupants were able to exit uninjured, however there was major damage to the structure.

Soon we will transition our election page over to this page. Why? We want you to hold us accountable to what we promised. We will post our priorities that were listed before the election and keep you, our citizens, updated. Please remember we have long and short term goals and things in the emergency services are very dynamic.

Oran Fire Proposition S - Safety

Please help us.

In exactly three weeks we desperately need your YES vote for our tax issue.

We need to replace the original one story structure as the roof has structural issues and the size itself is not adequate for today’s apparatus. We also need to update several pieces of life saving equipment. This will benefit you as well as us.

During this pandemic our personnel have never stopped responding to calls for assistance. We are there for you please be there for us.

Vote YES on Proposition S (Safety) on June 2, 2020.

04/13/2020

We do not want to discredit any person who is still out in this world working while the COVID-19 Pandemic is happening, but your Oran Fire Protection District Firefighters/First Responders are one of the organizations doing without compensation!!

We would like to thank our Brothers and Sisters of the Gordonville Fire Protection District for the great idea of giving the Easter Bunny a ride through town.

While we have so many young students out of school, let’s make sure we don’t have an increase in stove/cooking fires. #safetyfirst

Oran Fire Proposition S - Safety

Oran Fire Proposition S - Safety

Where do we need to spend the increase?

Obviously our number one priority is to replace the original 40x55 post barn station. As we are not asking for a bond (where the money is available immediately) this project will consume several years of the increase.
We have also established short term and long term goals. Obviously these are not in any specific order as Emergency Services are dynamic in nature.

SHORT TERM

LUCAS (cardio pulmonary resuscitation machine).

Grain Bin Rescue System and associated training.

Develop and implement a comprehensive public education program geared toward both fire and health safety issues.

Develop a program to reduce our rural ISO (insurance services organization) rating. This will, hopefully, lower how much fire insurance cost you.

LONG TERM

Build a FEMA approved Safe Room at the Station.

Emergency Generator installation at the station.

Purchase a cardiac monitor.

Replace dated vehicle/equipment rescue equipment.

Implement plan to reduce ISO rating.

Fund a Capital Improvement Plan.

Oran Fire Proposition S - Safety

Although another page was created to support Proposition S -safety, this is one fact we are proud of and felt the need to share it🥰.

Did you know?

Did you know that in the last seventeen years the Oran Fire Protection District has received over 1.3 million dollars in federal money through the Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG)? We have received grants for equipment, turnout gear, breathing apparatus, and three trucks. We have also received grants from other sources, such as the Missouri Department of conservation and Enbridge Incorporation (look for the announcement on our official page this week). This is one reason why we have not had to come back to the voters for a tax increase, until now. We have consistently searched and pursued grants to provide the equipment that we need. Unfortunately, when it comes to stations there are very few grant opportunities and those typically have restrictions that limit who can apply.

Please vote YES on Proposition S – safety, April 7th.

01/27/2020

The Board of Directors of the Oran Fire Protection District have authorized a tax levy question (Proposition S) to be placed on the April ballot. This question is asking voters to approve an additional $0.25 tax per $100.00 assessed value for the operations of the district.

The original station building is nearly forty years old and though it has been well maintained over the years by local volunteer fire fighters, the building infrastructure is failing. Along with the safety of our local volunteers, equipment size has changed drastically over the last forty years and the building is no longer accommodating.

With the passing of this tax levy, all of these issues would be addressed with the construction of a new station at the current site.

Additional information on our page, literature and at least one open house to tour the fire station will be available soon.

We hope to hear from you and to have your support on April 7th!

Liberty Gas and their contractor are working on a line, on Highway 77, between Oran and Morley. There is a chance that you may smell gas (mercaptan), like what occurred a few weeks ago. As always please contact liberty gas as well as 911 when you smell the odor of gas (mercaptan).

01/08/2020

For everyone that has called Liberty Utilities about a possible gas leak in town, thank you!

Liberty Utilities is working on their line out by the Enbridge Plant ( former Texas Eastern). Liberty is aware of the calls in town and they do have people in the area monitoring the atmosphere. We, the fire district, have also been out ensuring that no area had any potential danger to our #1 person, You!
