🛑 Traffic Safety Update: New 3-Way Stop on Callaway Drive

Attention Orange Beach drivers, residents, and trail users! Please be aware of a recent traffic control change at the golf cart and pedestrian trail crossing on Callaway Drive (located near the Orange Beach Police Department).

To ensure the safety of everyone sharing the road and the pathways, this intersection has been upgraded to a three-way stop.

What You Need to Know
For Trail Users (Golf Carts, Cyclists, & Pedestrians): Brand new stop signs have been installed on both pedestrian sides of the trail. All golf cart, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic must come to a complete stop before crossing Callaway Drive.

For Southbound Drivers on Callaway Drive: The existing stop sign for southbound vehicular traffic remains active.

Summary: Traffic from three directions—southbound on Callaway Drive, and trail traffic approaching from both the left and right—must now stop and yield the right-of-way accordingly.

Please stay alert, look out for one another, and give yourself a little extra time to adjust to the new traffic pattern. Let's keep Orange Beach safe!

During this time, residents and visitors in the surrounding area may hear loud noises associated with the training activities. Please do not be alarmed, as all exercises are planned in advance and conducted in a safe, controlled environment.

Just a reminder… we are under a rip current risk this week along the Gulf Coast.

HOW TO ESCAPE A RIP CURRENT
Remain calm. Fighting the rip current can exhaust you.

Escape the current by swimming parallel to the shoreline. When free of the current, swim at an angle—away from the current—toward shore.

If unable to escape by swimming, float, or tread water. When the current weakens, swim at an angle away from the current toward the shore.

If at any time you feel you will be unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself: face the shore, call, or wave for help.

To help someone else caught in a rip current, first call 9-1-1 for assistance, then seek help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not present, yell instructions on how to escape or throw the victim something that floats.

🚨 CRITICAL BEACH SAFETY ALERT: PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE WATER 🚨

The Orange Beach Police Department and Surf Rescue have already responded to at least 5 calls for swimmers in distress TODAY.
Conditions are extremely dangerous right now. We need everyone—residents and visitors alike—to take this warning seriously.

🚩 Current Flag Status: SINGLE RED FLAG
A Single Red Flag signifies High Hazard, High Surf, and Strong Rip Currents. For your safety and the safety of our emergency first responders, we strongly urge everyone to stay out of the Gulf and remain safely on the shore. If you are on the beach today, please review and share these critical safety protocols immediately:

🌊 How to Survive a Rip Current
Rip currents are powerful, localized channels of water that pull swimmers rapidly away from the shore. If you get caught in one:

Do NOT Fight the Current: Do not try to swim straight back to shore against the pull. You will quickly exhaust yourself.
Swim Parallel: Swim sideways (parallel to the shoreline) until you are free of the current's pull, then swim at an angle back to the beach.

Float and Signal: If you cannot escape by swimming, conserve your energy by floating or treading water. Face the shore, wave your arms, and shout for help.

🚫 If You See Someone in Distress: DO NOT GO IN
It is a natural instinct to swim out to rescue a struggling swimmer, but rip currents frequently claim the lives of well-intentioned bystanders.

Call 911 immediately and alert the nearest lifeguard.
Throw, Don't Go: Look for a flotation device (a cooler, a boogie board, a life ring) and throw it out to the victim.
Yell Instructions: Shout to them to remain calm, float, and swim parallel to the shore.

📲 Stay Informed in Real-Time
Beach conditions can change rapidly. Stay ahead of the hazards by signing up for instant local alerts:
Text ALBEACHES to 888777 to receive daily morning beach conditions and flag updates directly to your phone.
Please respect the power of the Gulf today. Keep your feet on the sand and let’s make sure everyone goes home safe.
