The Orange County Transportation Authority is currently considering cutting $5.2 million in annual funding for Metrolink through 2030. This amounts to an incredibly small percentage of OCTA’s overall budget—but comes at a time when Metrolink is facing a $30 million operating budget deficit, which if not solved will eliminate all mid-day, evening, and weekend service.

Without OCTA’s support for Metrolink, Metrolink will be forced to shorten routes and raise fares by up to 15%, leaving public transportation in Orange County permanently crippled. This will not only hurt the lives of tens of thousands of ordinary people, but also comes right as Orange County needs to be preparing to service millions more people on public transit, during th 2026 and the 2028 Olympics. These events not only require a state of the art public transit system—it is also something the residents of Orange County deserve.

OCTA has the power to stop the collapse of public transportation in Orange County through more funding for Metrolink services and restoring its commitment to full funding of the system. Step up to support public transit during the upcoming OCTA Board meeting on Monday the 11th at 9am, and contact your representative on the board to fight for a better public transportation system.

This April 30th, 2026 marks the 51st anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, as well as the start of the Vietnamese refugee diaspora. The Vietnamese American community has survived war and displacement, and they have worked hard for decades to build new lives. As our communities across the U.S. remember Black April, we must never forget those who risked their lives to escape to freedom here in America. That freedom that our families fought and yearned for is now under attack by the Trump Administration. The brutality of immigration enforcement is tearing Vietnamese American families apart and forcing many Vietnamese people to return to the country they fled. It is a stark reminder that democracy is only as strong as its institutions and people.

This April 30th, the Vietnamese American Democratic Club and the Orange County Young Democrats stand together in reaffirming our shared commitment to freedom and democracy. We dedicate ourselves to learning about and reflecting on our history as we continue to fight for a better future for Vietnamese Americans and for freedom, human rights, and democracy in Vietnam.

The Orange County Young Democrats stand firm in defense of voting rights. Today’s Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais undermines the core promise of the Voting Rights Act and the principle that voters should choose their representative, not the other way around.

We remain committed to fighting racial gerrymandering, reducing the influence of money in politics, and protecting free and fair elections for all.
