Hazardous Materials Incident Update

Orange City Fire Department continues to closely monitor the hazardous materials incident at the GKN Aerospace facility in the Garden Grove/Stanton area and remains engaged with regional public safety partners as the situation evolves.

At this time, there are no known impacts or threats to the City of Orange. Orange City Fire personnel are supporting incident management operations and maintaining direct coordination with county and regional emergency management agencies to ensure the latest information is available.

Due to impacts extending into neighboring jurisdictions, the City of Anaheim has joined Orange County Fire Authority in Unified Command to coordinate response efforts and support affected communities.

The County of Orange has activated its Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT), Team 1, to assist with incident coordination and operational support. Orange City Fire Department Battalion Chief Diersing is assigned to the team and is serving in the role of Incident Safety Officer.

Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place for portions of Stanton, Garden Grove, Anaheim, Cypress, Buena Park, and Westminster out of an abundance of caution while hazardous materials specialists, technical experts, and environmental agencies continue assessing conditions and determining the safest path forward.

Orange City Fire Department will continue to monitor the incident, support regional response efforts as needed, and provide updates should conditions change or information relevant to the City of Orange become available.

Members of Strike Team 1860A recently gathered for demobilization following several days assigned to the Sandy Fire in Ventura County.

During the assignment, Orange City Fire Department’s OES Engine 1104 worked alongside firefighters from across California to support containment efforts, protect threatened communities, and assist with wildfire operations under challenging conditions.

The Sandy Fire is currently estimated at 2,141 acres and 40% contained, with firefighters continuing to make progress toward containment objectives.

While our personnel have been assisting communities beyond Orange, Orange City Fire Department remains committed to maintaining readiness at home and monitoring developing incidents throughout the region.

Mutual aid reflects the strength of California’s fire service, with departments answering the call when communities need help most. We are proud of the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by our firefighters throughout this assignment.

The classroom chapter is coming to a close. AO Academy Class # 8 is wrapping up their final day of training before beginning field assignments with Orange City Fire Department crews.

We asked the class for their academy highlights, and the overwhelming favorite was getting behind the wheel of the rigs and meeting the people who make up the OFD family.

As for the least favorite part? Let’s just say Captain Stephan Fan’s PT sessions received a unanimous review. 😅

The next milestone is right around the corner.

Stay tuned for badge pinning.

Smoke, steep terrain, and long operational periods continue to challenge firefighters on the Sandy Fire in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Orange City Fire Department’s OES Engine 1104 remains assigned as part of Strike Team 1860A, supporting firefighting operations as crews work to improve containment and protect threatened communities.

The fire is currently estimated at 2,141 acres and 30% contained. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place for portions of the fire area as firefighters continue making progress.

Because of the fire’s proximity to the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, air quality and radiological monitoring teams remain active throughout the area. Officials report there is currently no indication that radiological material has been released from the site.

This assignment, along with another Orange resource recently committed to a wildfire incident elsewhere in California, reflects the increasing demand for mutual aid resources as fire activity ramps up across the state.

Back home, Orange City Fire Department continues to maintain staffing and emergency response capabilities for the residents and visitors we serve every day.

Orange City Fire Department’s Engine 1315 is currently assigned to the Verona Fire in Riverside County as part of Emergency Strike Team 1890C.

Since being assigned on May 20, firefighters have been working in steep, rugged terrain supporting containment efforts and protecting threatened communities. The Verona Fire is currently estimated at approximately 647 acres and 45% contained.

This marks the second Orange City Fire Department resource assigned to a California wildfire incident in recent days, highlighting the importance of California’s mutual aid system and the growing demand for firefighting resources across the state.

While Engine 1315 is assigned to this mutual aid response, Orange City Fire Department remains fully staffed and ready to respond to emergencies throughout the City of Orange and our surrounding automatic aid communities.

We are proud of the firefighters representing Orange on this assignment and look forward to welcoming them home when the job is done.

From Orange to the front lines. OES Engine 1104 remains assigned to the Sandy Fire as part of Strike Team 1860A (, , , ), working alongside firefighters from across California to protect lives, property, and threatened communities.

The fire is currently estimated at 1,375 acres with 5% containment. As temperatures rise and east winds continue, fire activity has increased along the southern portion of the incident, which is burning toward Albertson Fire Road in a remote area. More than 750 firefighters are assigned to the fire.

Helicopters, bulldozers, hand crews, and ground resources continue working to slow the fire’s spread and strengthen containment lines. Additional air tankers have been ordered, and CAL FIRE has requested three strike teams of hand crews to support ongoing operations.

We will continue sharing updates on Engine 1104’s assignment and the Sandy Fire as they become available.
