🚑 Earlier this month, County of Orange Fire & EMS shifts participated in a scheduled quarterly training event simulating a multi-vehicle crash. Crews responded as if it were an actual emergency, in coordination with partner agencies like the Orange County Sheriff's Office VA - Jason C. Smith, Sheriff, Virginia State Police, PHI Air Medical Fredericksburg - AirCare 2, and PHI Air Medical Culpeper - AirCare 6.🚁

In addition to COFEMS leadership, the training was overseen by several instructors who contributed their time to making sure our team is as prepared as possible. We truly appreciate their participation and assistance.

Realistic practice like this ensures our staff are ready to respond to actual emergencies. We're proud of the teamwork and skill demonstrated by each of our shifts. Well done!

🚒Friendly Friday Reminder: Give Kids a Role in Preparedness! 🚒

Preparedness isn’t just for adults! Children and teens can be part of keeping their families and communities safe.

This weekend, give your child or teen a preparedness job:

🔦 Check that flashlights have working batteries.
📱 Make sure important phone numbers are saved.
🧯 Learn where the fire extinguisher is located.
🐾 Help make sure pets are included in emergency plans.
🎒 Pick one item they would want in an emergency kit.
🌦️ Check the weather together and talk about what hazards may occur in your area.

Giving young people small responsibilities helps build confidence, awareness, and lifelong safety habits.

Preparedness is a team effort—and everyone has a role!

👟 Have you ever thought about your child’s shoes as emergency equipment?

Another school safety tip that you might not have thought of...
We think about school shoes in terms of comfort, style and dress codes.

But what if your child suddenly had to walk or even run farther than expected during an evacuation?

Wet grass. Gravel. Mud. Uneven ground. Debris.

Those brand-new shoes that looked great on the first day of school might not be so great for walking or running a distance.

It’s a small detail that’s easy to overlook, but preparedness is often about the little things we don't think about until we need them.

So as you’re checking the backpack, lunchbox and school supplies this year, take a look at those shoes, too.

Regular physical activity can help support your heart, strength, balance, mood, and overall health. You don’t have to run a marathon—small steps add up!

💙 Take a walk around the neighborhood
💙 Stretch while watching TV
💙 Park a little farther away
💙 Garden, dance, or play with the kids
💙 Start with just 10 minutes and build from there

The best activity is one you enjoy and can safely make part of your routine.

The National Weather Service has issued a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for Orange County effective immediately, Saturday, August 22, 2026 until 9 pm.

Hazard: 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

Impact: Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could Injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

Precautionary/Preparedness: For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Move indoors immediately.

Follow reliable weather forecasts.

El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional ha emitido una ADVERTENCIA SEVERA DE TORMENTA ELÉCTRICA para el Condado de Orange con efecto inmediato, el sábado 22 de agosto de 2026 hasta las 9 p. m.

The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WATCH for Orange County effective immediately today, Saturday, August 22, 2026 until midnight tonight.

Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded.

Additional Details: Several rounds of slow moving showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the area through late this evening.

Precautionary/Preparedness: Monitor reliable weather forecasts and be prepared to take action should a Flash Flood Warning be issued.

El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional ha emitido una VIGILANCIA DE INUNDACIÓN para el Condado de Orange con efecto inmediato hoy, sábado 22 de agosto de 2026 hasta la medianoche de esta noche.

✔️ Keep numbers visible from the street—day and night.
✔️ Trim trees, bushes, and grass that may block your address.
✔️ Keep your driveway and access to your home clear.

It only takes a few minutes, but every second counts when you need help.
