Back to School season is here, and we’re excited to welcome our students back!
Today, I had the opportunity to visit our Office of Student and Community Services to drop off backpacks and school supplies, where I saw firsthand the incredible efforts being made to support our kids. A huge THANK YOU to all the amazing volunteers who generously donated school supplies – your contributions make such a difference in our students’ lives! Your dedication helps ensure every child is prepared and ready to succeed. Let’s make this school year the best one yet!

We Are OUSD: Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow! On Wednesday we held our annual Welcome Back Leadership Team Meeting, where we got to know the newest members of the team, collaborated on the status of our work on the district strategic plan, and had some fun with an esports tournament during our lunch break. We are so excited to see our students back on campus on August 21!

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the grand opening of The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana with Trustees Erickson and Glass. This vibrant community event at the Old Courthouse Museum in Santa Ana, sponsored by OC Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento and OC Parks, highlighted the incredible talents of Chicano artists. On loan from The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in Riverside, the exhibit beautifully illustrates how art can transcend language and resonate with us all.

It was an especially meaningful and inspiring evening for me because I connected on a personal level with the pieces that reminded me of my rich family history, having parents who grew up in East Los Angeles during the 1960s. If you are looking for a free, fun, and educational activity before school starts, I recommend checking it out!

Our team at AVID San Diego 2 this week! We had 68 teachers and administrators there, and 229 OUSD educators who attended an AVID Summer Institute this year.

Orange Unified is proud to be an AVID district, home to both a National AVID Demonstration School (Orange) and an Elementary Showcase School (Olive). AVID is a system that supports students in developing skills for college readiness and success in a global society. 🍊

⭐️ Measure S Update ⭐️

Orange High's new 26,000-square-foot student services and administrative building, which includes six new 1,200-square-foot classrooms, is on track to open for our students and staff for the 2024-25 school year! Thank you to our community and the CARE Committee for bringing this to life for our students.

Watch as the new Measure S Phase II Building at Orange High comes to life. Opening Fall 2024 for the students of Orange Unified. Thank you taxpayers!

At tonight's Orange Unified School District Board of Education Meeting, we had the opportunity to celebrate our great friend and colleague, Mr. Dave Rivera, who is retiring at the end of the month. We appreciate his years of dedicated service to our district and wish him well as he moves on to the next chapter in his life. We will miss you, Dave!
