Edna Lewis, the Grande Dame of Southern Cooking, the person most responsible for putting the “slow food” movement on the culinary map was born and raised in Freetown, a freedman’s community in Orange County, Virginia. Lewis authored three, groundbreaking cookbooks and is credited with bringing the culture and heritage of African American, Southern Cuisine to the world.

Edna Lewis’s legacy is celebrated not just through her cooking, but also through her lasting mark on the community. When you’re in Orange County, Virginia, be sure to visit her historical marker, which honors her life and contributions. Located near her hometown of Freetown, this marker commemorates her profound impact on Southern cuisine and her role in preserving the cultural significance of the food we continue to enjoy today!
