Enough is Enough!!
On Friday, December 1, 2017, our committee received notice that the January 23, 2018 School Board Special Election that the public voted on and approved will not take place.
On November 7, 2017, Orange Township voters approved a referendum reclassifying Orange from a Mayor Appointed School Board to a Citizen Elected School Board. 86% of the votes cast that day overwhelmingly favored School Board elections as well as holding a Special Election in Jan. 2018 for two additional school board members, as required by law, and as written in the Interpretive Statement that appeared on the ballot.
The Orange BOE was to file for a Jan. 23rd Special Election date. County Clerk Christopher Durkin tried to contact the Orange BOE members, the BOE Business Administrator and Orange Schools Superintendent for a two-week period beginning before and ending after the deadline date. All parties chose not to return Mr. Durkin’s calls until well after the deadline. The Orange BOE ignored the Will of the People, and unfortunately, Orange has missed the January Special Election deadline.
As a result of this willful negligence, the last Special Election date available is March 13, 2017. We have yet to see if the Orange BOE chooses to adhere to law or will once again act unlawfully and not file for this election by the Jan. 12th deadline.
Our Committee, our allies and our neighbors are incensed, to say the least…but not surprised. The actions of the Orange School Board members are consistently contrary to the wants of the people.
It is this wanton disrespect that led us to form the CTOSB. Our intent is to preserve the remaining citizen privileges as outlined in the November 2017 Interpretive Statement. We are gathering signatures for one more petition asking voters if they wish to keep regular BOE elections in April. Doing so will allow citizens to vote on the Budget and General Tax Levy. If elections are moved to November, the public loses the right to vote on the Budget and Tax Levy and will not be able to convert back to an April election date for a 5-year period.
It is imperative that we do not allow Orange Public Officials to routinely ignore parents and residents. Orange citizens came together in an unprecedented way, successfully advocating for school board elections. Let’s not lose sight of the powers that we possess granted to us by the government. Let’s continue the fight for our rights and work together for our own best interests, especially when Orange Public Officials continue to act otherwise.
Sincerely,
Committee for a Transparent Orange School Board
