Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced that an Orangeburg County man has been charged with murder after a fatal weekend shooting.
"None of this makes one bit of sense - at all," the sheriff said. "There is absolutely no reason under the sun that could justify this individual's actions."
Ravenell said 38-year-old James Canaday has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Orangeburg County Sheriff's investigators were dispatched on Saturday to a Kyzer Brown Road location in Springfield where they found a 50-year-old male deceased of a gunshot wound.
Canaday was taken into custody soon after and charged.
The Neeses man is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced that a long-term narcotics investigation ended Friday morning with an arrest and the seizure of drugs, fi****ms and cash from an Orangeburg residence located less than 2,500 feet or roughly .05 miles from the Orangeburg County Law Enforcement Complex.
Ravenell said the residence is located in the middle of an established residential neighborhood, surrounded on all sides by occupied family homes. Families want to live and play in safe areas and not have to live by someone dealing drugs, he said.
"We are talking about a drug operation running in the heart of a neighborhood, in plain view of this agency, with families living on every side of it," Ravenell said. "Children were sleeping a few feet from a stockpile of narcotics and high-powered weapons. That is what makes this one different, and that is why we would not let it go."
Kenneth Clark, 37, of 950 Graham Street, was taken into custody early Friday after investigators executed a search warrant at the residence.
Clark is charged with possession with intent to distribute ma*****na and possession with intent to distribute ecstasy. A woman at the residence was charged with simple possession of ma*****na.
Investigators recovered five pounds of ma*****na, 65 ecstasy pills, more than $5,500 in cash, an AK-platform rifle, two shotguns, a G***k pistol and ammunition for each weapon. A Chevrolet Silverado was towed from the property.
Clark has been released on a $20,000 cash or surety bond.

Sometimes...it takes a village. Orangeburg proved yet again - it is that village.
A member of our community was reported missing earlier today. Multiple first responder resources were dispatched to the area. Drones, K9s, and multiple personnel. More, the community responded as well. When the missing person was discovered in an overgrown vegetation of undergrowth and trees, an excavator was brought in! Sheriff Ravenell and the OCSO appreciate the concern, prayers, and assistance of our community!

UPDATE: Amanda has been found! Thank you for your support and prayers!

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced that investigators are seeking help in locating a missing and possibly endangered person.
"If you've seen this lady or think you've seen this lady, please call us," the sheriff said. "We want to get her back to her family as soon as possible."
Ravenell said Orangeburg County Sheriff's investigators are seeking help in locating 56-year-old Amanda Wise.
Investigators learned Wise was last seen near Prestige Court off Neeses Highway just after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Wise is described as a white female standing about 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighing around 165 pounds.
She is believed have been wearing a blue shirt.
Anyone with information on Wise's location is urged to call the Orangeburg County Communications Center at 803-534-3550.
