Congratulations to probationary firefighter Will Aubrecht on his completion of Firefighter 1 through the Erie County bootcamp this past summer. Will put in a tremendous amount of work and endured many uncertainties with COVID-19. The county was able to run the bootcamp classes and Will stuck through schedule changes and a conflicting school schedule to get the job done. We are very proud of your hardwork!

Today, on the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, we remember those who lost their lives. We remember the first responders who gave their lives for others, the civilians who perished and the families who still endure loss even today.

Over the past several weeks the members of the Orchard Park Fire Company have been busy with training. While adhering to the CDC, state and district regulations, firefighters were able to conduct live fire evolutions at the Chestnut Ridge training facility, practice firefighter survival/bailout skills, and conducted a training with our rope rescue equipment and discussed operations as part of the regional rope rescue team. We have been hard at work catching up and making the most of the time at the firehouse. We can't forget to mention that the Orchard Park FAST/RIT is also back to a normal training schedule. We look forward to sharing more about our trainings with the community!

Monday night is our weekly training night and this week focused on auto extrication with an emphasis on back to basics (stabilization, battery control, etc.) We were able to practice the 'wide body' technique on a donated vehicle which was great to get members some time using the Hurst tools.

Training however was cut short with dispatch alerting district firefighters to the report of a structure fire on Meadowlawn Road. Crews quickly transitioned and responded to the structure fire with Engine 1, 2 and Truck 6. Upon arrival Engine 1 stretched an attack line to the rear of the residence. Luckily it was determined that the source was a dryer fire and no extension was found. Crews cleared the scene and returned to training.

We are firm believers in training for real life situations. Tuesday afternoon was a perfect example. Orchard Park firefighters were alerted to a MVA with injury at Rt 20a at the Rt. 219. Upon arrival crews found a passenger vehicle vs SUV with the driver of the sedan pinned inside. Rescue 7 split their crew to ensure the vehicle was stabilized and that extrication could be started quickly. Both the hydraulic and edraulic Hurst tools were used during the patient removal. The driver also had his foot caught under the brake pedal. Three ambulances were used to transport patients to the hospital for evaluation. The topics covered in the Monday night training were the exact tactics and techniques that were used to free the trapped driver.

Orchard Park Chief Newell had Command and Assistant Chief Gibbons had operations. Thank you to Town of Orchard Park Police Department, Orchard Park Fire District EMS, Windom Volunteer Fire company and the Hillcrest Volunteer Fire Company for their assistance.

Amid nonstop, pouring rain, several rescue agencies responded to a downed hiker on the Eternal Flame Trail at Chestnut Ridge in Orchard Park today. Hillcrest Chief Jon Torre, in command of the incident, reported that a female hiker had sustained a knee injury near trail marker 20. Due to terrain, location of the victim, and weather conditions, it was decided to rescue the victim using a rope rescue team.

As of approximately 12:40pm, Chief Torre reported there were over twenty rescuers in the woods, in addition to several command units at the trailhead. At 1:17pm, command reported that the victim had been extricated from the woods, and was being evaluated by EMS personnel. Around 1:30pm, all units returned from the scene following a successful rescue operation.

Rescue agencies on scene included Hillcrest Volunteer Fire Company, Orchard Park Fire Company, Orchard Park Fire District EMS, Seneca Hose Company #1, West Falls Volunteer Fire Company, North Boston Volunteer Fire Company, Erie County Sheriff's Office, Erie County Parks, Recreation & Forestry, and Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services.

The Erie County Regional Tech Rescue Team was called to assist the Hillcrest Fire Company today with a hiker with an injured leg at the Eternal Flame in Chestnut Ridge Park. With the heavy rain on the trails, it was decided the safest way to bring the patient back up was to use ropes and a stokes basket. The team built a main line system with a high point anchor to haul the patient and 2 rescuers up the ravine to safety. The patient suffered only minor injuries.Team members from Hillcrest, Orchard Park, West Falls, Seneca Hose, and Erie County Sheriffs Office were on location. Other team departments were staged for manpower if it were necessary.

Yesterday was a hot day but that didn't deter our volunteers from going out and conducting water flow training. It was a perfect evening to flow water from Engine 2 and Truck 6 while working with our new firefighters on utilizing the 2.5 hose line.

This past Saturday, July 4, members of the Orchard Park & Windom Fire Companies staffed the District Mutual Aid Pumper (DMAP) from 12p-12a at the Orchard Park Central fire station. This staffing provided a fully staffed engine and 2 ambulances to handle calls within the town and village for the holiday.

During the 12 hour shift crews responded to fire & EMS calls including a request from the Newton Abbott Fire Company, Inc. for the district Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) for the reported garage fire. Because of the staffing, crews were able to respond to emergency requests within seconds!

In between calls, the crews conducted firehouse maintenance and apparatus cleaning. A special thanks to the firefighters who volunteered for the standby and to those firefighters who donated meals for the crew for the day.

Yesterday the Orchard Park Fire Company was requested mutual aid to the Vigilant Volunteer Fire Company as a standby engine while they were out on a commercial structure fire at 1700 Union Road. Shortly after Engine 1 arrived at the Vigilant fire station they were requested to the scene by command.

With Engine 1 being fully staffed with 6 volunteers the crew was able to split into two teams one being led by Lt. Kelly and the other by Cpt. Majstrovic.

There was very limited visibility during suppression operations, both crews from OP Engine 1 were able to utilize their personal thermal imaging cameras (TICs) to assist crews in getting water on various hot spots. The picture below shows the TIC in use under "color mode" which shows the hot fire vs. the cold water. Engine 1 operated for about 4.5 hours before being returned in service.

Yesterday afternoon at approximately 1535 hours the Orchard Park Fire Company was dispatched mutual aid to the Windom Fire Company for an auto accident at Rt 20a and Abbott Rd. Initial reports came in to fire control reporting multiple vehicles involved and a driver pinned. Windom units arrived on location and began scene size up and stabilization. Orchard Park Engine 2 acting as the rescue company utilized struts and the Hurst edraulic tools to free the pinned driver. Windom and Orchard Park were aided by the Armor Volunteer Fire Company who responded as a mutual aid rescue.

Last week the Orchard Park Fire Company was requested mutual aid to the Springbrook Volunteer Fire Company for a rollover MVA on Transit Rd. After clearing a CO call Orchard Park Engine 2 acting as the rescue company responded as a special call for the air bags for lifting.

Thankfully no serious injuries were reported for either accident.

Good afternoon, on behalf of State Fire Administrator Nerney I’m pleased to announce that we are ready to begin regional training on a limited basis. Counties will be contacted by OFPC staff in the coming days to begin the planning process. The policies and procedures that we have all become familiar with will need to be in place for county level training to be conducted. Our initial focus will be to complete those courses that were postponed due to NY PAUSE. Class size along with other engineering controls will dictate the rate of completion as some classes my need to be split as a result of distancing requirements. As a result, course offerings for the remainder 2020 may be limited and may not reflect what had been previously planned for each county. As always our office will continue an open dialogue and work with each county to the greatest extent possible to meet their 2020 training needs.
