Attention Orchard Park Business Owners!!!

Does your business have a Knox Box? If not, are you familiar with the Knox Box program?

A Knox Box installed on the exterior of your commercial business provides the fire department with rapid access to the interior of your building. This secure means of entry, minimizes property damage and the need for forcible entry.

In an emergency, time matters! Key holders for your business may not be available or delayed. A Knox Box will give fire responders the access needed when it matters most.

For more information we encourage business owners to contact the Orchard Park District Chief Jay Knavel at: [email protected].

A “routine” traffic stop by a Wyoming County Sheriff’s Deputy lead to a great arrest, and helping an Orchard Park resident who was being scammed out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

**PRESS RELEASE**

$200,000 WORTH OF STOLEN GOLD BARS RECOVERED DURING 20A TRAFFIC STOP

On July 25, 2023, a Wyoming County Deputy Sheriff conducted a traffic stop on State Route 20A near Toolhouse Road in the Town of Warsaw for traffic infractions. During roadside interview, the Deputy Sheriff developed reasonable articulable suspicion a crime was being committed. A subsequent consent search of the vehicle was conducted, and $208,226.00 worth of gold bars were located inside a backpack on the front seat. On the rear seat, multiple torn open UPS packages were located, with the name of an elderly man from Orchard Park, New York. The driver, Jaspreet Singh, age 28 of Queens, NY, denied ownership of the gold bars, and Singh was released pending further investigation.

Subsequent investigation revealed the resident in Orchard Park, NY had been the victim of an Elder Fraud Scheme. Deputy Sheriffs worked with Orchard Park Police Department throughout the investigation. The victim was found to have been contacted by a person claiming to be a United States Marshall, demanding payment in order to avoid arrest. The person claimed a United States Marshall Courier would drive to the victim’s residence, and that the victim was to place gold bars of a certain value into the rear seat of the courier’s vehicle. The victim complied, and the 20A traffic stop occurred within an hour of the exchange. The stolen gold bars were recovered and will be returned to the owner at a later date.

Also as part of the investigation, search warrants were conducted on two [2] smartphones which were located in Singh’s possession on the date of the traffic stop. Multiple videos of child po*******hy were located on Singh’s cell phone. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for Singh’s arrest.

Wyoming County Deputy Sheriffs worked with Passaic Police Department in New Jersey, after developing information that Singh could possibly be within the Passaic, NJ jurisdiction. Singh was taken into custody by Passaic Police Department and held as a Fugitive From Justice. On August 11, 2023, Wyoming County Deputy Sheriffs traveled to Passaic, NJ where they took custody of Singh and transported him back to Wyoming County to face his charges. Singh was arraigned in Warsaw Justice Court on charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Second Degree [Class C Felony], Possession of an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child Less than 16 [Class E Felony], and Speed in Zone. Following arraignment, and in compliance with NYS Bail Reform, Singh was released on his own recognizance. After processing at the Wyoming County Jail, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took custody of Singh, pursuant to an Arrest Warrant and Immigration Detainer issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office reminds the people of Wyoming County to be skeptical of any unsolicited phone calls where a person is asking for money or personal information. Government agencies will never call a person offering to accept payment in exchange for avoiding arrest. Further information on Elder Fraud Schemes can be viewed at the following websites:

Last night the Orchard Park Police Department Unions (Police Benevolent Association and Command Officers Association) participated in their Annual Orchard Park Police Shop with a Cop. Fifteen local children were treated to a night out with members of the police department. The event started at the Community Activity Center where the children and their families enjoyed dinner catered by Leo’s and received a special visit from Santa Claus. Everyone then headed to Orchard Park Target where the kids were able to Shop with a Cop to purchase gifts for themselves and their family members. Gift bags filled with goodies were provided to each child from Target.

After shopping, the children were able to get a special police photo ID card in the community policing vehicle and tour a police car. Police dispatchers and civilian staff, along with members of the officer’s families helped out with the event by setting up, serving dinner, and shopping!

While this event is hosted by the Orchard Park PBA and COA, generous donations were also made by the Orchard Park Police Foundation, Orchard Park Police Dispatchers and local Good Samaritans which helped fund the event.

The Orchard Park Police Department was so excited to participate in this event and had a great time spending time and shopping with a great group of children and helping make their Christmas an extra special one.

**SCAM ALERT**

The Orchard Park Police Department has received several reports over the last few days of residents receiving phone calls stating that a friend/family member has been arrested and needs bail money to be released. The caller correctly uses the friend or family member's name on the call and directs the resident to go to the bank and withdraw a large sum of money. A "courier" then arrives at the residence to collect the money.

THIS IS A SCAM. Please do not confirm any personal information over the phone and certainly do not hand over any amount of cash to strangers.

While there are many versions of this scam which are based out of distant areas of this country and even overseas using demands for Moneygrams and Gift cards, this one is local and involves a scammer who knows personal information about the victim and will come to your house.

If you receive such a call, end the phone call and contact us immediately at 716-662-6444.
We would like to thank Harrison Phillips and his Playmakers Foundation for donating a delicious lunch to our department from Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant.
