November is Native American Heritage Month and the Cultural Ecology team here at kʰanumakwst chaku-łush needs your help celebrating. We will be hosting a few volunteer days in November to help with restoring our oak prairie. Each day we will take some time to learn about the different invasive species on our site, why we don't want them, and different ways to use these displaced relatives. You will get the chance to bring some teas home!

We were extremely proud to attend Kinship House’s annual Light the Way event and support them in celebrating their 30th anniversary! What a fun night raising funds for their incredible, heartfelt, and impactful work. Even more fun with Dr. Poison Waters, Cassie Nova and Binkyee Bellfower provide great entertainment and you get a photo with your Executive Director, Simon Fulford. Thank you Tessah Danel for the kind invitation and fun to run in to Rachel Currans-Henry (Governor’s Office) along with some other friends. One love when you are doing powerful work!

We are proud to be part of these insightful and informative Community Conversations. As a child and family serving organization, we want all children and families to have access to resources to help them thrive — regardless of their educational environment. Through this presentation and conversation, participants will increase their understanding of the landscape of homeschooling in Oregon and locally in Clackamas County. We'll learn about the diverse reasons families choose to homeschool, what options exist, and some of the resources that are available. We'll hear from several organizations, ask questions, and have time to learn and reflect together about our roles in connecting with families who don't participate in formal school systems.

We are excited to be sending key program staff and our Executive Director to this conference, courtesy of our partners at the Early Learning Hub of Clackamas County. Our children are the future. They deserve the very best! We look forward to learning new skills and ideas that we can incorporate into our programs and develop new services as well.

Last Friday, our BIPOC Youth Council cooked up a feast for a little end-of-week cultural celebration. With the guidance and support of our Cultural Ecology Program Manager, the youth prepared everything from the rice and beans to the salsas, including Salsa de Aguacate, grilled cactus and carnitas. Yum!!!

We are humbled and honored to be 2026 Urban Land Institute Americas “Awards for Excellence” winner alongside some incredible and much bigger community projects. We knew that when we started out on this project that it would not be easy. But we set our sights VERY high as we believed that our nation's most vulnerable children deserve the very highest level of care and in an environment that nurtures, heals and propels them to succeed. With an incredible team of visionaries and experts we made our dream come true and delivered on our promise to kids.

This award is a recognition that all children deserve dignity and every opportunity to succeed. Not just the 1%.

We hope this recognition allows other child-serving organizations, other communities, other cities, states and even countries to dream big, believe it is possible, and deliver what is needed for kids.

Our children are our future. Thank you ULI for recognizing this.

We were honored to host a tour of our residential campus and offer a deep dive into our Indigenous-led Cultural Ecology Program for the Willamette Falls Trust, Leslie Mason, CFRE, Kate Brown, Elisandra Garcia, Zeljka Carol Kekez, and the summer interns at PLACE. Always fun and inspiring to share ideas with like-minded, values-led, community-centered leaders, thinkers and dreamers🥰.

On Monday, we had the distinct honor of hosting our friends and partners from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund along with two of their high school summer interns. We gave them a deep dive into our Cultural Ecology Program, a tour of our residential campus and then a walk through kʰanumakwst chaku-łush, the Chinuk Wawa name of our property, for a little exploration of the flora and fauna.
