On Wednesday, our A Safe Place partners came together in a powerful show of support for survivors by participating in Denim Day—wearing denim on denim in solidarity.

Denim Day is observed each year to raise awareness about sexual assault and to stand with survivors. It began in Italy in the 1990s after a court overturned a r**e conviction, citing the victim’s tight jeans as evidence of consent. In response, women in the Italian Parliament wore denim to protest the ruling and challenge harmful myths about sexual violence.

As April comes to a close, we recognize that while Sexual Assault Awareness Month may end, our commitment to this work does not. We will continue to stand with survivors, raise awareness, and advocate for change every day.

A Safe Place is honored to stand alongside our partners and the City of Oregon City Commission in recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting survivors, raising awareness, and building a safer, more compassionate community. 💙

Last night Oregon City Mayor Denyse McGriff and the Commissioners proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month! Partners from A Safe Place Family Justice Center, and the District Attorney’s Victim Assistance Program came out to show their support of the proclamation. CWS Training & Outreach Manager, Erin Ritchie, had the opportunity to speak to Oregon City Mayor and Commissioners about the importance of SAAM and collaborations at A Safe Place. We thank the Oregon City Commissioners for proclaiming April as SAAM and highlighting this important issue in our community. Watch their statement at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH7L-yF-utc

This year, for the 25th anniversary of the national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign, the theme is “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward.”

For 25 years, SAAM has united survivors, advocates, and communities in the shared commitment to end sexual abuse, assault, and harassment. This milestone is both a celebration of progress and a call to keep moving forward. Throughout the month, we will honor the movement’s history and growth while reaffirming our commitment to a safer future for all.

Here in our community, we kicked off April 1st by lighting the Oregon City Municipal Elevator in teal. These lights will shine throughout the month, raising awareness and increasing visibility in support of survivors.

We’re excited to announce the launch of our Lunch & Learn series for staff! This series creates space to learn from fellow partner agencies and explore other valuable professional development opportunities.

In honor of National Stalking Awareness Month, this month’s session focused on understanding stalking behaviors and response options for survivors. The presentation was led by Carrie Walker (pictured below), Director of the District Attorney’s Office Victim Assistance Program.
