Battery recycling is now the law in Illinois and here in Ogle County the Solid Waste Management Department has partnered with the Battery Network (formerly Call2Recycle) to safely collect and transport all batteries free of charge here for our residents. All batteries will be banned from Illinois landfills starting in 2028.

Rechargeable batteries should never be placed into household trash or household recycling bains/carts.

While the Solid Waste Management Dept. has for some time now collected rechargeable batteries for recycling, this new program is free of charge both for residents and the county and also now includes alkaline single use batteries as well!

Department staff has received the assigned training and now are awaiting the shipping drums for batteries, which include fire retardant layering as well for safety, and smaller containers for damaged, defective, recall batteries as well.

Accepted batteries: Li-Ion, alkaline, Ni-MH, NiCD, button, sealed lead acid, primary and mid-format. NO car/marine batteries/cores accepted (take to auto parts store).

Batteries will be collected as normal on Friday March 27th from 9 am to 4 pm at 909 Pines Road in Oregon as part of the monthly residential electronics collection, and starting Tuesday Feb. 17th 2026 batteries may be dropped off at the department office (address above) weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm, excluding holidays

Call 815-732-4020 or visit the Ogle County website for more information on this new program.

Storing damaged batteries is not recommended. To reduce the risk of fire, bury the battery in a container filled with sand, cat litter, or soil and place it on a non-flammable surface away from all heat sources and other flammable material. Then bring it to a proper facility as soon as possible. Mail-in damaged battery recycling kits are also available for sale through online vendors.

Never put any rechargeable batteries or devices with embedded batteries into the trash or recycling container.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Mgmt. Dept. accepts all rechargeable batteries for recycling at their monthly events. Next event is February 28th. Call 815-732-4020 or email [email protected] for a free permit or for more recycling information. 🌎🌎🌎

Food waste is an on-going issue locally and on a national level. Food waste is a waste of valuable resources and a major contributor to methane gas emissions from landfills. Methane gas is a major contributor to climate change, being on the order of 20X more heat-trapping than carbon dioxide.

There are no options for food waste pick up to haul this material to a compost site in Ogle County. We cannot rely on waste haulers for this service, it is up to all of us.

With holiday entertaining on the horizon, let's reduce food waste this year here in Ogle County!

Prevention: plan meals and school lunches accordingly to avoid excess waste, then store and use all leftovers in a timely fashion. Shop smart, and check to see what you already have in the house before buying additional food. Always take home leftovers from eating out, try to bring a reusable container if possible too!

Composting: start a back yard compost pile, this is recycling food waste into usable compost for your garden. These are easy to build and maintain, and can accept all fruit/veggie trimmings and wastes, egg shells, coffee grounds, and house plants, grass clippings, leaves, and twigs.

Food waste is a waste of agricultural efforts, water resources, fuel resources, and is truly unfortunate considering how many go without. Do what you can to eliminate food waste this holiday season any beyond!

Rethink Recycling - our recyclables are not waste, they are turned back into useful products and commodities. The more clean and pure our recyclables are the more recycling works and is able to be sustained.

Keep it clean, empty, and loose (no plastic bags!)

Cardboard, paper, junk mail, catalogs, newsprint, paperboard

Cartons for food and beverages

Aluminum and steel cans

Glass bottles and jars

Plastics #1-5, #7 bottles, jugs, tubs

That's all that is accepted in our household recycling, so it is easy.

Have a great weekend, remember to reduce, reuse, then recycle!
