Happy Dispatcher Appreciation Week!!!!

Would everyone please join us in telling our dispatchers how incredibly valuable they are? These people are the backbone of our organization.

The keepers and purveyors of vital life saving information. The person that answers the phone when you call on the worst day of your life. The voice on the radio when we find ourselves alone in a bad situation.

These individuals are a special breed, working under constant stress but still providing what is needed when it is needed most! We love them here at the Holt County Sheriff’s Office not just for their skills but also because they are part of our LE family. I can’t even begin to pay them in a manner that truly represents their value to the community. They work long hours, work over time, days off and holidays and still make it happen when everything is on the line.

There have been many challenges, training, selecting the best personnel and retaining personnel but these true professionals keep fighting the good fight right alongside us. Dispatch and Deputies are one team in Holt County and we are proud to have them as teammates.

We couldn’t do it without them and neither could Holt County!

A huge thank you to everyone who made last night’s apprehension possible. From the Holt County resident who was situationally aware and saw the suspect to the MSHP Troopers who backed us up to the awesome dispatcher who was able to keep all the information flowing and direct personnel where they needed to be. This was a team effort! This is how law enforcement is done! Hand in hand with the community we serve. Every participant served a vital role. Total elapsed time from phone call to arrest in a wooded area was less than 15 minutes. Deputies arrived on scene and had the suspect in custody in under 2 minutes. Though we originally believed that he had left the area, he had waited until dusk to try to mask his movement. The suspect, a resident of Lincoln NE, was arrested on MSHP’s charge of leaving the scene of an accident, a Sheriff’s Office charge of trespassing and he also had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear on multiple felony charges out of Nebraska. Partnership is the name of the game. Thank you all!

Update
The suspect is now in custody by the Holt Co Sheriff’s Office following a citizen tip.

Update

We are getting a lot of calls in regards to the driver that fled from the scene of the accident at Exit 67. He was never located and believed to be from Nebraska. At this time the only charge is leaving the scene of an accident. Due to his physical size and the weather, it’s doubtful that he went very far. The highest probability is that he made a phone call and had someone come pick him up. These are not absolutes, so always be aware of your surroundings and call us if you see something specific.

Thank you for your assistance,
Sheriff

There was a motor vehicle accident at the 67 mile marker of I-29. A black male wearing dark clothing was seen running to the west into the timber from the incident. HCSO Deputies are currently out searching the area, but if you see anything please contact the Holt County Sheriff's Office.

Good Morning Holt County

With the storm headed our way, we wanted to share some information.

The following locations are available to stay warm if you are having heating issues at home.

In Mound City

The library during business hours

The senior center during business hours

The truck stop 24 hours

If situations dictate it, additional locations will be made available and the information shared.

Also keep in mind that if you are out driving during the storm and you get stuck or your vehicle disabled, wreckers won’t be towing cars off the interstate for the safety of all those involved. Your vehicle will be left until the roads are clear enough to safely retrieve them. Deputies, MSHP and MCPD will be out to pick up stranded motorists and transport them off the roadways. Please keep this all in mind. Get your errands and supplies taken care of early, get home and batten down the hatches!

Be safe All!

..Bursts of Heavy Snow Showers or Snow Squalls This Afternoon and
Early This Evening...

Areas of heavy snow showers or more intense snow squalls will
spread from northwest to southeast across the region, mainly
between 2 PM and 8 PM. Heavy snow showers will reduce visibility
to under one mile and will be accompanied by wind gusts of 30 to
40 mph.

If you encounter a snow squall, follow these tips to stay safe:

Reduce speed and turn on headlights! During snow squalls, the
visibility may suddenly drop to near zero in whiteout conditions.

Consider avoiding or delaying travel until the snow squall passes
your location. If you must travel, use extra caution and allow
extra time. Rapid changes in visibility and slick road conditions
may lead to accidents.

If traveling on a highway, find the nearest exit or rest area and
park safely away from traffic. Allow snow squalls to pass before
attempting to resume travel.
