The best training I ever had did not happen in a classroom.

It happened at the kitchen table.

Not because of the food — because of the two to three hours of shared time where experienced firefighters talked and newer ones listened. Where stories carried lessons no manual could teach. Where trust developed through proximity and conversation.

The changes that have reduced that shared time are not failures. They reflect real improvements in modern fire service life.

But something changed without anyone naming what it was.

The CRR conversation new firefighters need is not happening.

Not because nobody wrote it in an article.

Because the senior firefighter they ride with every shift — the one who actually sets the cultural reality — has not made it part of how they lead.

A rookie who heard the chief say CRR matters will not say it once to a crew that rolls its eyes. They want to belong.

The culture has to already be there when they arrive.

🚒 West Virginia State Fire Marshal Launches Statewide Home Safety Assessment

We're excited to announce that the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office under the leadership of Kenneth E. Tyree Jr.., CFPS has partnered with Virtual CRR Inc. to launch a custom statewide Home Safety Assessment designed to help residents identify fire and life safety risks in their homes—before an emergency happens.

This initiative gives every fire department in West Virginia access to the same professionally developed Home Safety Assessment at no cost, creating a consistent approach to community risk reduction across the entire state.

Why is this important?

For years, many departments have had to create their own home safety materials, assessments, and public education campaigns from scratch. While every department shares the same goal—keeping their communities safe—the result has often been inconsistent messaging, duplicated effort, and limited data.

This statewide initiative changes that.

✅ Every department can promote the same evidence-based Home Safety Assessment.

✅ Residents receive consistent, high-quality home safety education regardless of where they live.

✅ The State Fire Marshal's Office gains valuable statewide data to help identify trends and guide future prevention initiatives.

✅ Local fire departments can personalize campaign materials with their own department logo while supporting a coordinated statewide effort.

Community Risk Reduction is most effective when prevention efforts are coordinated, easy to access, and simple for both firefighters and residents to use.

Most fire departments think their CRR program is further along than it actually is.

This article offers something the CRR space has been missing — an honest benchmark. Four stages of program maturity, honest self-assessment questions for each one, and a clear path from where your program is to where it could be.

The defining characteristic of a mature CRR program is not sophisticated data systems or broad community partnerships.

It is whether the operational side of the house — company officers, battalion chiefs, engine crews — genuinely owns CRR as part of their job.
