NEWS RELEASE: “JOIN THE NH CLIQUE”: INCREASED SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT PATROLS BEGIN
CONCORD, N.H. – Beginning this week and continuing through May 31, state and local law enforcement agencies across the nation are stepping up their enforcement efforts for drivers and their passengers who are not wearing their seat belts.
In New Hampshire, 121 law enforcement agencies are scheduled to participate in the “Join the NH Clique” campaign, utilizing funding provided by the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety (NHOHS). State law requires anyone under the age of 18 to be secured by either a seat belt or a child safety seat. It is a driver’s responsibility to ensure that all child passengers are properly restrained.
While seat belt use in the state is among the lowest in the United States, wearing a seat belt is the single most effective decision a person can make to protect themselves and others in the event of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“We urge all drivers and passengers to wear their seat belts on every trip, without exception,” said New Hampshire State Police Capt. Vincent Grieco, Enforcement Liaison to the NHOHS. “Sadly, choosing not to buckle up continues to result in preventable tragedies across our state. Through this campaign, we aim to save lives.”
In 2025, about 25% of victims of deadly vehicle crashes on New Hampshire roads were not wearing seat belts.
Six unbelted occupants, including drivers and passengers, have been killed in vehicle crashes to date in 2026. In 2025, 34 people who were not wearing a seat belt were killed. In 2024, 38 unbelted people were killed.
