is home to American black bears (Ursus americanus). 🐻 Stay by keeping an eye out for bear s**t and tracks. This may mean a bear is in the area.

Black bears typically avoid humans, but if you do encounter a black bear:

• Remain calm and give the bear a chance to leave the area.
• Stay with your group and pick up small children.
• Be aware of the bear’s location and back away slowly.
⚠️Do not run! ⚠️
• If the bear approaches, yell loudly, wave your arms, and throw objects

You can help us prevent black bear encounters, too!
Black bears love human food, but it can make them too comfortable being around humans. Never feed a bear, directly or indirectly. 🚫🍔🌭 Make sure to:

• Use the campground bear-proof lockers for food and all scented items.
• Dispose of garbage immediately in bearproof trash cans.
• Carry a bearproof canister when backpacking. Keep a clean camp at all times.
• Keep it crumb clean anywhere you visit in the park by picking up any and every food scrap.

Please report any bear sightings to a park ranger.
If you witness an aggressive bear, immediately call 911.

Considering taking a drive through the Bald Hills?

Visitors may know this road for Lady Bird Johnson Grove or Tall Trees Grove, but there is so much more to explore in this remote area of .

Found in the southern end of the park, this county road is an east-west road that goes from Orick, CA to Highway 96 near Weitchpec, CA.

⚠️ We do not recommend this road for those driving recreational vehicles or vehicles pulling trailers. It is windy, narrow and can be a rough road. Part of it is gravel and will be very dusty, especially in the summer.

Happy Monday! May the otters ever be in your favor!

Otters? Take a page out of the otter playbook to survive the work week.

First, stay hydrated and always have a snack on hand. Otters eat up to 15% of their body weight each day. Same. Fuel yourself, stay energized, and tackle all your tasks with gusto! Well, tackle them the best you can.

Communication is key. Make your emails meaningful, to the point, and with only a hint of passive-aggressiveness. Otters communicate with over 20 different sounds, and they know exactly when to avoid the scary tones of an incoming Teams call.

Take deep breaths and enjoy moments of calm. Fun fact: river otters can hold their breath for up to 8 minutes. Maybe don’t try that at your desk…unless someone is heating up leftover fish in the break room across the hall.

Most important of all, keep a ‘paws’itive attitude! (Because tomorrow is only Tuesday.)

Did you see this year’s Lupine superbloom?

If so, you also saw how prescribed fire plays a supporting role in prairie ecosystems! 💜🔥🪻

The prairies of the Bald Hills have been managed using fire since time immemorial, revealing a fascinating trend in the relationship between fire and flowers. The purple Riverbank lupine (Lupinus rivularis) consistently blooms in abundance two years after prescribed fire. It appears that fire helps the hard-coated seeds germinate, leading to the gorgeous sights visitors have been enjoying this month.

Come catch a glimpse of the bloom before it’s gone!

And don’t forget to recreate safely 🥾
