Every couple of years it is necessary to do a prairie burn on our prairie. This is done to help eliminate unwanted, "pesky" plants and tree seedlings. On Sunday, April 26, the Orient Volunteer Fire Dept burned our prairie. First pic is of the prairie before the burn, next several are during the burn and after the burn. Last picture is some of the guys who came out to help with the burn. Unfortunately, we did not get as good a burn as we would have liked; the wind changed directions 3 times and the wind came up. Got a little exciting for a few minutes! Thank you to the Orient Fire Dept for doing this for us!! Much appreciated!!

I remembered that I had taken these pictures of Steve refereeing his last basketball game. It was an Orient-Macksburg girls game and he had said that he started here in Orient at a girls game so he wanted to finish it here. He was one of a kind. R.I.P. Magic

A late season snow storm is set to affect southern Iowa starting on Thursday. Snow is expected to move into southwest Iowa around daybreak and then spread north and east through the day. Moderate to occasionally heavy snow is forecast at times by Thursday afternoon and into the evening across southern Iowa. Brisk east to northeast winds are also expected which will produce some drifting and blowing snow. If traveling across the southern half of Iowa on Thursday into Thursday night, be prepared for hazardous driving conditions. Additional information can be found at www.weather.gov/dmx

Confidence in amounts and location are still on the low side as of today, but it appears winter will hold on for several more days with moderate snows expected across southern Iowa Thursday into Thursday Night. Details on exact amounts are uncertain, but it appears moderate accumulations are possible, potentially in the 3-6 inch range toward the Missouri border. The good news is that winds will be light so blowing snow is not anticipated. The higher end of the potential range would occur mainly on grass and elevated surfaces, but higher snowfall rates could still lead to accumulations on roads and low visibilities presenting travel difficulties as well. Be sure to check the latest forecasts and road conditions over the next few days for updated information. The latest forecast details can always be found at https://weather.gov/desmoines.

ACCB UPDATE:
The Adair County Conservation Board has a few updates for our park users as we welcome Spring! Lake Orient Campground remains closed as we are currently revamping our entire electrical system for our campers! There is also new water lines being added so that campers will be able to hook up directly at each site. The anticipated completion date is May 1st, but due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, the campground opening date is still to be determined. To minimize the spread of COVID-19, our playgrounds at both Lake Orient and Mormon Trail are also closed until further notice. All of our parks are still open to the public and next week looks like great weather to practice our social distancing on our various hiking trails, fishing from our great shore accesses, and just being outside! We will keep you updated here on our page so please share with your friends! If you have any questions, feel free to call the office at 641-743-6450. Check out some recent pictures below from our Lake Orient Campground!
