UPDATE: Due to nuisance issues affecting neighboring properties and limited available space, the dumpsters for City Wide Cleanup have been relocated to city property behind the City Maintenance Building on Chicago Ave.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, residents may access the dumpsters by using the access road next to the City Maintenance Building on Chicago Ave.

The gate will be open daily from dawn to dusk.

No dumping or access to the area will be permitted after dark. The gate will be closed nightly, and violators will be prosecuted.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we continue working to provide this cleanup service for residents.

The City of Orient is proud to announce that we have officially been awarded a $50,718.02 Energy Transition Community (ETC) Grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

This grant funding will be used to help rehabilitate approximately 1.25 miles of deteriorating roadways throughout Orient, including improvements on Franklin Avenue, Lemon Street, Orchard Street, Thayer Street, Ward Street, and Dominick Street. Planned work includes asphalt patching, oil and chip resurfacing, roadway preparation, and additional base material where needed.

Following the workforce reductions at the MC #1 Mine, our community — like many others in southern Illinois — has faced increased financial strain while continuing to maintain essential public infrastructure. This grant was specifically designed to support communities impacted by changes in the energy industry, and Orient was successfully selected for funding.

Mayor Jan Segatto took the initiative to identify this grant opportunity and complete the application process on behalf of the City of Orient, with the full support of the City Council throughout the project.

This funding will allow the city to make meaningful infrastructure improvements without placing the burden directly on local taxpayers.

We appreciate the support of our residents as we continue working to improve our community and pursue outside funding opportunities that benefit the people of Orient.

CITY WIDE CLEANUP is set for May 21 through May 24 in the City of Orient.

Dumpsters will be available at City Hall for residents to dispose of bulk trash items during the cleanup period.

Large items may also be placed at the roadside for pickup by city workers. Please have roadside items out early so crews can work efficiently throughout town.

Important reminder: TVs will NOT be picked up. Republic Services will not accept televisions, so residents will need to make separate disposal arrangements for those items.

Also, if your property may be in violation of city ordinances involving trash, junk, or debris, now is a great time to get into compliance. The city will begin enforcement of applicable ordinances following city wide cleanup days.

We appreciate everyone doing their part to help keep Orient clean, safe, and looking its best.
