We reached another important function to our purpose of sharing the Adobe with the public: school visits!!! Third-graders from Moraga schools came by the carloads and walked through the adobe after hearing informational comments by president of the FJMA Kent Long. This visit was Friday, April 17. They also visited another day and we figured that a total of 122 students came.
We continue to host visits on selected weekend dates. See www.moragadobe.org to schedule a visit.

We had our first Official Official Tour! I say it twice because we have had some other groups in but last Sunday was our first official open public tours (by appointment of course)). We had three different sets of visitors come in and see the Adobe. It was very exciting for us after spending the last 17 years envisioning such a thing. To book a tour visit www.moragaadobe.org and find a time slot. Under the conditions that we operate (very limited parking, fire code, neighborhood considerations, personnel, drop-ins are NOT possible.

After almost 20 years of fundraising, meetings and planning, the Moraga Adobe now begins its journey of being a destination you can visit!
You can now go directly to the FJMA website to get a spot in the tours.

We are located within a developed residential neighborhood. For this reason, we will never be open for drop-ins and we are further restricted by parking spaces, fire safety capacities and a city-mandated limit of annual visits. So visitors are asked please not to come WITHOUT a reservation.

We are nowhere near finished with our landscaping or interior furnishings but we feel it’s time to share this with the public. We are especially eager to show all who donated to the cause and have wondered just when they could finally see the place!

To book a tour, go our website, scroll down and look for the reserve button by date. For group visits, we are reserving special time slots, available by email inquiry. We are currently listing spring dates and will post later dates as we see how things are working out.

If you still have questions, there is an informational email address: [email protected]. Click link below to see dates.

The pavers are here! Thanks to our generous supporters who purchased personalized pavers to help us restore our adobe. It’s taken some time to get them. Our landscape crew established the circular area with blank pavers (which came last month) and now the personalized ones will go in place of blanks before the final sand is applied. Overall, the viewing area is really coming together. Special thanks to our Treasurer Margaret Beck for coordinating this program! (This photo was taken December 15 and the installation of the customized pavers is happening now.)

One of the goals of the friends of the Joaquin Moraga Adobe Is engagement with historic, civic, academic and cultural communities as well as the general public. We don’t want to just be a site that you visit but also part of ongoing learning. To that end, archaeology students from St. Mary’s College under the direction of Professor Cynthia Van Gilder have begun a project dig on the grounds of our Adobe. They came for a visit on Tuesday, October 28 to see the inside of the adobe and hear our story. These are juniors and seniors who will likely continue their studies in related areas.

One of our first official group tours was held last Saturday, Oct.18 with members of Los Californianos, a genealogical organization made up of descendants of people who lived in California prior to 1848. The group was holding their semi-annual movable meeting in Martinez. Most everyone in the picture has Hispanic ancestors and even some with relation to the Moraga family.

We had our first school visit! Golden Valley River School 8th graders, led by teacher (and descendant) Lisa Moraga!! FJMA Pres Kent Long did the inside tour while yours truly (Lance Beeson) and Marilyn Merlino taught them several dances and songs. We still have a long ways to go with our material presentations as well as landscaping but it was a great visit.

After many months, our Landscape plan was approved and plants and hard scape are coming to the adobe. It’s been hard to get excited about welcoming guests to our adobe with an all dirt lot but that’s changing right now. In addition, we have taken delivery of our reproduction rawhide beds made by Joe Claus and John Grafton. Here are a few snaps taken yesterday, inside and out:
