Did you know that someone from Orland Park was influential in the construction of Southwest Highway? Dr. Walter R. Schussler, doctor and Mayor of Orland Park from 1925-1929, was also the President of the Southwest Towns Chamber of Commerce. One of his goals in this position was to complete the highway in time for the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago.

Did you know that the Orland Volunteer Fire Department operated out of the old Village Hall building on Beacon Avenue beginning in 1894? In 1960, a new station and Village Hall building replaced the old white-framed, two-story structure. The new building was built by the 25 volunteer firemen. The original building had two old wooden garages and was cold and damp, whereas the new building allowed for additional storage, a kitchen and an area for firemen to gather. Money for the new structure came from donations raised by the volunteer firefighters.

Want to learn more about the history of Orland’s Fire Department? Our next Village Hall display will focus on their history! Keep an eye out for it at the end of September.
