Orland Fire Department - Maine Orland Fire Department is an all volunteer organization providing fire and rescue response. Our Firefighters are a true volunteer workforce.
(1)

Our firefighters meet or exceed the State of Maine Bureau of Labor Standards for structural firefighting. Many of our firefighters have successfully completed training from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group though the Maine Forest Service including Basic Wildland Firefighter, Wildland Urban Interface, Engine Boss and Forestry Pumps. Other noteworthy training includes Incident Safety Officer

, Basic and Advanced Vehicle Extrication, Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), Engine Company Operations, Advanced Fire Attack, Cold Water Rescue, Confined Space Rescue and numerous other courses. They receive no wages, salaries or other monetary compensation while responding to emergency incidents, conducting training or maintenance, or participating in other events. Funding to operate, maintain equipment, provide apparatus, facilities and personal protective equipment (PPE) are provided through an annual tax appropriation. The Town of Orland and the Orland Fire Department are participating members of the Hancock County Mutual Aid Pact. This pact ensures our member town departments will provide or receive help during emergency incidents as needed, at no cost to each other. No department can safely handle large incidents without the help of their neighbors. We are proud to be part of this pact.

Dispatched around 3:30 this afternoon for a serious motor vehicle accident at the intersection on top of HOME hill. Seven OFD personnel responded initially with Engine 512 and Rescue 581 and POVs. The Maine State Police and Bucksport EMS also responded along with several from the Marine Patrol. Due to the seriousness of the incident, it was determined that a scene reconstruction would be needed. This prompted additional response of 3 personnel with Engines 511 and 513 to close Acadia Highway and divert traffic via the Castine and Gray Meadow Roads and support at the scene.
While 10 personnel for a crash sounds like a lot, it really was not. Some of the busiest intersections with multiple lanes had a single firefighter managing traffic the best they could while trying to keep things moving (and not get run over in the process).
We understand it was hot, traffic was delayed, and it was confusing for many. Yeah, we had a few people express their frustrations, or drive through or around the vehicles and people doing traffic. We also got a lot of thank you's, waves, nods, some chuckles and at least one blown kiss (at least that's what we think we saw}. Our thanks go out to the very vast majority of folks who safely navigated our short handed diversion.
PSA- Stopping in the middle of traffic to yell at us about how dangerous the intersection is, isn't really very productive or helpful. We get it, we go there, a lot.
Anyway, thanks to all of our folks, our partner agencies and tow friends for their work and safe operation. Call 56 for the year. -501

Dispatched at 5pm for the report of a vehicle fire on Acadia Highway by Hartview Circle. First arriving unit on scene in two minutes (lives near by) and reported no fire present. A failure of the vehicle cooling system caused heavy steam that was mistaken for smoke. Engine 512, Rescue 581 and EMS were stood down by command. Three members remained on scene with the operator until law enforcement arrived and cleared us.
Nine personnel responded to assist with unit 506 in command. Call number 55. -501

Late yesterday evening several of our personnel gathered to conduct our monthly truck and SCBA maintenance checks. Others worked on administrative or other tasks that needed attention. This is one of those behind the scenes things your volunteers do frequently to ensure compliance with the various regulations and requirements fire departments must follow. It's not all lights, sirens and emergencies. Thanks to all who helped last night.

Dispatched this evening right at the start of our monthly meeting for the report of a motorcycle accident at the Acadia Highway and Duck Cove Road intersection. Engine 512, Rescue 581 and several other firefighters in personal vehicles responded to assist. The rest of the crew remained at the station on standby. Call 54.

Dispatched this afternoon for a two vehicle accident on by the post office on the Castine Road. Seven OFD personnel responded with Engine 512, Rescue 581 and by POVs. The Castine Road was shut down briefly during the incident. Bucksport EMS and the Hancock County Sheriff's Office also responded.
To those in a hurry and huff who felt the need to squeal your tires, yell at our personnel, or tell them it will be their fault if you get lost because you were re-routed away from the incident, I hope you understand you didn't really "show us what". In the end, we hope you made it home or wherever you were headed safely.

Last night about ten of our members spent a couple of hours training with air packs, hose handling, search and rescue, pump operator and driver training. The goal was realistic engine company operations with low visibility (theater smoke) in a garage with numerous obstacles.
After the training session, we also reloaded hose, refilled air bottles and put gear back in service to be ready for the next call.
A big thanks to those who took time out of their busy lives to work together and practice skills.
Edit: All of the firefighters in air packs in these photos are interior qualified ladies in our department. It wasn't by design, it just worked out that way. We are fortunate to have these dedicated bad assed firefighters in our community. -501

Memorial Day.
Despite these heavy rains dampening many plans for the day, we reflect on those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
We are grateful for these men and women who's service ensures our right to be an imperfect nation, voice our opposing views, and continue to be who we are as people.
Please take a few minutes from your day to think about and appreciate their service.

Dispatched just before 1am this morning for a fire alarm activation at a local business at their gas pumps. Five personnel responded with Engine 511 and by POV to the store. While enroute, dispatch advised a deputy who was in the area reported the fire suppression system had been activated.
We arrived and confirmed the system had been activated manually with no evidence of fire. It was soon determined to be a malicious act by a person known to LE. A manager responded to assist with an attempt to reset the system. Due to the light rain, some of our folks put down pads to help minimize run off into the retention pond. The scene was turned over to staff for further mitigation and professional clean up. Call 50. -501
