“Screwworm Spreads Beyond Texas

The Department of Agriculture announced Monday that three new cases of New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite infecting cattle and other mammals, have been confirmed, including the first outside of Texas.

A calf and a goat in Texas were found to be infected, and a third case occurred in a dog from Lea County, New Mexico. Last week, the USDA confirmed cases of screwworm in two calves a few miles apart from each other in south Texas—the first time the parasitic flesh-eating fly larvae had been detected in American livestock in decades—and on Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott expanded a statewide disaster declaration authorizing the use of all available state government resources to respond to the screwworm’s arrival.

Experts predict that a widespread outbreak could cost Texas $1.8 billion a year in economic damage and could greatly harm the state’s wildlife.

On Friday, Canada temporarily stopped importing cattle, horses, and other livestock from Texas to protect against the screwworm threat.

The USDA is investing $750 million to build a facility in Texas to produce about 300 million sterile screwworms a week to release into the wild. Since female screwworms mate only once, these sterile males would serve as reproductive dead ends. The facility won’t be operational until late 2027 at the earliest.”
