What it looks like day to day: a student following a science lesson as it happens, not catching up from notes later. A Deaf parent understanding every word at a conference about their child. A senior crossing the graduation stage while an interpreter signs each name, so the moment is fully theirs.

The interpreters we place are RID or EIPA credentialed and trained for the classroom specifically. Interpreting for a first-grader learning to read asks for something different than a staff meeting, and these students deserve someone who knows that difference.

Five years in, we're still glad to do it.

A 2024 study out of Boston Children's Hospital and Boston Medical Center tested ChatGPT and Google Translate against professional human translation for pediatric discharge instructions across Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole.

For Spanish and Portuguese, machine translation performed comparably. For Haitian Creole, the gap was significant. ChatGPT produced potentially clinically significant errors in 33% of cases, and Google Translate in 23% compared to just 8% for professional translations. Professional Haitian Creole translations were also the most preferred by evaluators nearly half the time.

The researchers noted that differential results for Haitian Creole and other languages of limited diffusion may expose already at-risk patient populations to excess clinical harm and poorer quality of care.
