The Orlando Fire Department in partnership with Police Department and City of Orlando Families, Parks and Recreation held the first 60 Minutes to Safer Swimming to help educate parents about water safety and provide FREE introductory swim lessons to children at the Dr. Smith Neighborhood Center.
In total, 93 children received swim lessons!
The goal of the program is to prevent pediatric drownings in our community. Florida leads the nation with highest number of pediatric drownings (ages 1 to 4 years old).
Orlando Fire personnel and OFD Cadets provided water safety education, free hands-only CPR training and monitored the swim lessons.
Every Saturday in June we'll host a 60 Minutes to Safer Swimming event at a different neighborhood center. Registration is FULL for the program but, you can still register for a swim lesson at orlando.gov/learntoswim, sign up for CPR lessons at orlando.gov/takeheart and request a door alarm installation at orlando.gov/communitycare.

Hot car deaths are preventable but, they continue to happen each year. 37 children die each year from heat stroke either because they were left or became trapped in a car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Safety Tips to Protect Your Child

• Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time.
• Make it a habit to check your entire vehicle — especially the back seat — before locking the doors and walking away.
• Ask your childcare provider to call if your child doesn’t show up for care as expected.
• Place a personal item like a purse or briefcase in the back seat, as another reminder to look before you lock. Write a note or place a stuffed animal in the passenger's seat to remind you that a child is in the back seat.
• Store car keys and fobs out of a child's reach and teach children that a vehicle is not a play area.
