"Flock cameras have quickly become one of the hottest button issues in Florida politics, and state lawmakers are already discussing how to address the issue permanently.

Florida de-Flocked all state and some local roads virtually overnight, easing some of the 4th Amendment and privacy concerns expressed by many citizens. But it also put on pause a technology that has been touted by law enforcement as an effective crime-fighting tool.

Now, state lawmakers are in early talks about how to balance those countervailing interests in the form of statewide legislation.

“Those who would trade liberty for security, in the end, will have neither security nor liberty. And those are the things we must be mindful of as we craft this legislation,” said State Rep. Dean Black (R-Jacksonville).

Black is asking constituents to weigh in to help gauge what the public wants to see done on the issue.

“Do you want more ability for law enforcement to track people and solve crimes? Do you want more responsible safeguards put in place, and what exactly should those look like?” said Black."

"A Florida lawmaker is calling on the Florida Athletic Commission to revoke the license of kickboxing promoter Duel Arena following an August 29 event at the Kia Center that drew controversy over alleged antisemitic imagery and gestures.

State Rep. Anna Eskamani is also asking the commission to immediately suspend Duel Arena’s license and prevent the promoter from holding future events in Florida.

In a letter to the commission, Eskamani alleges the promotion held an additional fight that had not been approved by state officials.

“Only ten matches were approved and there were 11, and the 11th one had a referee that was not sanctioned to be a referee,” Eskamani said.

Eskamani is also raising questions about fighters who were advertised but ultimately did not compete, as well as one matchup in which she says there was a 112-pound difference between the two opponents.

Eskamani said the alleged violations raise concerns beyond the normal disputes that can surround professional combat sports."

"In the harrowing months that followed the attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers were repeatedly assured that the air around the fallen towers was safe to breathe.

But 10 months later, health officials were still finding evidence of asbestos as much as half a mile away, according to a sample of air quality records released on Tuesday.

The documents, reviewed by The New York Times in advance of their release, include more than 170,000 pages of air quality reports, contamination records and correspondence among city officials. The records were stored in 68 boxes in a city office, shielded from public view for more than two decades and, according to city officials, discovered only last year."

The Mamdani administration released more than 170,000 pages of documents related to the air quality around the World Trade Center site in the months after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Does anyone here remember K-Mart? The one located near the intersection of Alafaya and Colonial?

That's the last K-Mart my Mom worked at before she passed away from colon cancer in 2004. K-Mart had already declared bankruptcy in 2002, and they were liquidating the store she worked at in 2003. She worked with cancer to the last day she could.

My twin sister, big brother, and whole family spent a lot of time at that K-Mart.

Some weekends, during her 2:00pm-10:00pm shift, we would stay at the K-Mart to be closer to our Mom (and because we couldn't afford a babysitter). We got to witness the hard work of her and her peers, and the love they showed to their community and customers.

We also saw the struggle families like ours faced. At the checkout line, we were always armed with coupons, and if we were over budget, my Mom would make quick decisions about what items to put away to get us back on track.

Today, we are navigating an incredibly complicated world marked by extreme polarization, automation, corporate consolidation, job loss, and high costs. But a common thread that I know can keep us united is a heart and commitment for the everyday worker. And when our workers thrive, we all thrive!
